Campers and Trailers Repair in San Juan Capistrano

A camper or towable trailer is living space with no engine, carried on its own axles or in a pickup bed and pulled by a separate tow vehicle. Everything about how it fails traces back to two things: a welded steel frame that flexes, and a bonded box that does not.

Towables are the largest and most varied group we handle. A teardrop weighs less than a motorcycle. A forty-three foot fifth wheel with five slides weighs as much as a loaded delivery truck and stands taller than most freeway overpasses were signed for. What connects them is architecture: a ladder frame of welded steel channel, a floor deck bolted or lagged to it, walls that are either bonded laminate or aluminum sheet over lumber, and a roof membrane holding it all out of the weather.

Because there is no engine to drag the whole assembly into a service department every few thousand miles, towables get inspected far less often than motorhomes. The damage we see reflects that. Seals go three or four seasons past their life. Bearings run dry. A sidewall stays wet for a year before anybody notices. By the time a trailer arrives, the visible problem is rarely the first problem, and the estimate always begins with finding out how far back the failure started.

Southern California adds its own signature. Units stored outdoors in San Juan Capistrano bake under intense UV that chalks gelcoat and hardens every sealant bead on the roof. Coastal air corrodes axle hardware and steel frame welds from underneath where nobody looks. Then a coastal storm arrives and finds every place the sun already opened. Pop-up camper

Folding tent trailers combine a hard lower box with canvas or vinyl bunk ends and a lift system of cables, pulleys and torsion springs. The failures are mechanical and textile rather than structural: stretched cables, seized pulleys, torn bunk fabric and roof lift binding on one corner. Roof skins on older pop-ups are thin aluminum over a light frame and dent easily under storage covers. We rebuild lift systems, replace bunk fabric and repair roof and box panels.

Teardrop trailer

Teardrops are small enough that the whole shell is one structure, usually aluminum or composite over a plywood or foam core on a light frame. Their compact shape means every panel is curved, so a dent cannot be planished flat and a damaged panel is generally replaced or re-skinned. Galley hatch hinges and their seals are the number one service item, because the hatch is a large hinged panel with a long seal that never quite wants to stay watertight.

A-frame camper

A-frame folding campers raise two hard roof halves into a peak, giving a solid-walled unit with the packed height of a trailer. The hinge line along the ridge and the two lower panel joints are the critical seals, and they take flexing every time the camper is opened. Panel skins are thin and are supported by internal framing that owners cannot see, so a repair to a dented roof half usually means opening the interior side to reach the structure behind.

Expandable and hybrid trailer

Hybrids combine hard sidewalls with fold-out tent bunk ends at one or both ends, and the bunk hinge line is a permanent compromise between a structural joint and a weather seal. The bunk floor cantilevers off that hinge carrying the weight of two adults. When the hinge or its backing structure loosens, the bunk droops and the seal opens. Fabric replacement, hinge rebuild and reinforcement of the bunk floor connection are the routine jobs on this style.

Park model

Park models are built to a residential standard on a trailer frame and moved rarely, with residential windows, pitched shingle or metal roofs and full-height walls. Because they sit in one place for years, the damage is weathering rather than road stress: roof degradation, wall skin fading, deck and step rot at the entry, and water damage at window flashing. Any move triggers a structural check, because a park model frame is designed for placement rather than repeated highway travel.

Destination trailer

Destination trailers sit between a park model and a fifth wheel: highway legal, but designed for seasonal placement with residential furniture, large windows and sometimes a loft. The extra glass area and the loft floor add weight high in the structure, so the sidewalls carry more load than a conventional trailer of the same length. Sealing schedules matter enormously here because these units live outdoors continuously rather than being stored under cover between trips.

Ultra-lite trailer

Ultra-lite construction shaves weight with thinner laminate, aluminum framing on wider centres and lighter frames so the trailer can be pulled by a mid-size SUV. The trade is a structure with very little reserve. Impacts that would dent a heavier trailer punch through, floor spans deflect more, and cabinetry mounted to thin walls works loose over time. Repairs on ultra-lites focus on restoring stiffness with proper backing rather than simply replacing what was there.

Bunkhouse fifth wheel

Bunkhouse layouts add a rear or mid bunk room, frequently over a rear garage-style storage bay, which concentrates weight behind the axles and adds a second entry door in a sidewall that would otherwise be continuous. Second doors are a common water entry point because the opening interrupts the wall laminate and the awning rail above it. Bunk ladder mounts and upper bunk supports also take a lot of abuse and pull out of thin wall panels.

Rooftop tent camper

Roof tents and wedge campers mount to a rack or bed rack and load the vehicle roof or bed rails with static weight plus significant dynamic load over rough ground. Rack mounting points, crossbar spacing and the condition of the vehicle roof rails decide whether the installation lasts. We fabricate and reinforce bed racks, repair mounting points that have started to elongate, and address roof panel deformation on vehicles where the load was carried on too few points.

Overland camper trailer

Off-road trailers use an articulating hitch, independent suspension and a welded steel or aluminum body designed for washboard and rock. The hitch and its mount take enormous cyclic load and are the primary inspection item. Bodies are usually welded rather than laminated, so damage repair is fabrication and welding rather than panel bonding. Fitted rooftop tents, drawer systems, water tanks and dual battery installations all get checked when the trailer is in for structural work.

Utility trailer

Open utility and equipment trailers carry no living space but share every running gear failure with an RV: worn bearings, tired brake magnets, sagging leaf springs, elongated shackle bolts and corroded frame welds. Deck boards rot from the top down and the frame rusts from the underside up, so a trailer can look fine and be structurally marginal. We repair frames, replace decking, rebuild suspension and treat corrosion, and we straighten tongues and ramps that have taken a hit.

How do I know whether my trailer wall is delaminated or just dented?

Press the panel with a flat palm. A dent is firm and holds its shape. Delamination feels soft, moves under light pressure and often makes a faint crackling sound as the skin lifts from the substrate. Bubbles usually appear below a window, a slide flange or a trim rail. A moisture meter reading across the panel confirms whether water is still present in the core.

Can a cracked trailer frame be welded, or does the frame have to be replaced?

Most cracks are repairable. The correct approach grinds the crack out completely, prepares the joint, welds it with the right process for the steel section, and then adds a gusset or doubler sized to carry the load that caused the crack. What matters is whether the surrounding rail is still sound and straight. Widespread cracking, corrosion through the web or a bent rail changes the answer.

My roof looks fine from the ground. How often should it actually be resealed?

Inspect every penetration annually and plan on resealing lap joints every two to three years in this climate. UV in Southern California hardens sealant faster than the manufacturer schedules assume. A roof looks fine from the ground right up until the interior ceiling stains, and by then the decking underneath has usually been wet for a long time.

Do you work on the running gear as well as the body?

Yes, within scope. Suspension, axles, electric brakes, bearings, hitches and couplers are all handled here. Engine, transmission and drivetrain work on tow vehicles is not, and neither is emission or roadworthiness certification. If a trailer needs both body and running gear work, doing them in one visit avoids paying twice to move a long unit.

Is a pre-purchase inspection worth it on a used trailer?

On this class it is the highest value few hundred dollars an owner can spend. Moisture readings, a roof walk, an underbelly check, frame inspection and running gear assessment routinely uncover deferred work worth many times the inspection cost. It also gives a documented basis to negotiate rather than a general impression that the unit looked clean.

My insurance adjuster wrote a much smaller number than your estimate. What now?

That is normal on towables and it is usually a scope disagreement, not a rate disagreement. Automotive estimating databases do not contain laminate sectioning, roof decking or slide removal times, so first estimates land low. We document teardown findings with photographs and moisture readings and submit a supplement. Most gaps close once the carrier can see what is behind the skin.
