How RV Cabinets Are Actually Built

The average RV cabinet is not furniture. It is a lightweight box, frequently 1/8 or 1/4 inch lauan panel stapled and glued to a light hardwood face frame, sometimes with no back panel at all because the wall serves that function. It is engineered to weigh almost nothing and to be assembled quickly on a production line, and it succeeds at both.

That construction is fine at rest and marginal under load. A box designed to hold dishes in a stationary kitchen has to survive several hundred miles of vibration on a coach, and the loads that vibration puts into a stapled joint are cyclic rather than static. Staples work loose, glue joints in thin panel fatigue, and the box starts to rack, which is what produces doors that stop closing square.

Higher-end coaches use real plywood boxes with hardwood face frames and dovetailed drawers, and they hold up much better. Even those, though, are attached to the coach the same way, and attachment is usually the actual failure point rather than the cabinet itself. A dovetailed plywood box screwed into thin wall panel comes down exactly as fast as a stapled lauan one, and it does considerably more damage on the way to the floor.

Attachment Failure and Why Cabinets Come Off Walls

The single most serious cabinet failure is an upper box separating from the wall, and it happens because the original screws went into panel rather than into framing, or because they went into framing that has since been softened by moisture. On a laminated sidewall the interior surface is thin composite or lauan, and a screw in it is holding almost nothing once vibration has enlarged the hole.

The warning signs precede the failure by months. A gap opening at the top of the cabinet where it meets the wall, a face frame corner that has cracked, doors that suddenly need lifting to close, or a visible lean. Owners generally read these as cosmetic and they are not; they are a load path telling you it is failing.

The correct repair is finding framing, not finding longer screws. Our techs scan and probe to locate structure, add cleats or French cleat backing where framing spacing does not suit the cabinet, and re-anchor with fasteners appropriate to what they are actually biting into. Where the framing itself is compromised by past moisture, that gets addressed before the cabinet goes back on the wall.

Hinges, Slides and Latches That Survive the Road

Hidden Euro hinges are the standard in RV cabinetry and they are also its most frequently replaced part. The cup mortise is bored into a door edge that may only be 5/8 inch thick, and the mounting screws pull out of that material after enough cycles. Replacing a hinge into a stripped cup means repairing the substrate first with a dowel or an epoxy plug, not driving a fatter screw into a ruined hole.

Drawer slides split into two worlds. Friction slides are cheap, quiet enough and prone to sagging as their plastic rollers flatten. Ball-bearing slides are heavier, run better, and demand square drawer boxes and precise mounting. Upgrading a coach to ball-bearing slides is a common request and a good one, as long as the drawer boxes themselves are square enough to accept them.

Latches are not optional in a vehicle and this is where residential thinking fails. A magnetic catch that holds a kitchen door in a house will not hold a loaded drawer through a hard stop. RV cabinetry needs positive mechanical retention, push-button or roller catches that require an action to release, and any remodel or repair that installs residential hardware creates a genuine hazard on the first mountain descent.

Delamination, Thermofoil and Water-Swollen Bases

Thermofoil doors are MDF with a vinyl film heat-formed over them, and the failure is always the same: the film releases at an edge or a corner, usually near a heat source such as an oven, a cooktop or a south-facing window. Once the edge lifts, moisture reaches the MDF core and the door swells. There is no reliable way to re-bond a lifted thermofoil edge that will hold, so the door gets replaced or refaced.

Cabinet bases tell the water damage story first. Because they sit on the floor, a base cabinet is the first thing a wet floor reaches, and particleboard or MDF bases swell dramatically and irreversibly. A swollen base under a sink is frequently the earliest visible evidence of a plumbing leak, and metering the floor around it is more informative than looking at the cabinet.

Veneer and laminate on boxes fail differently, lifting in sheets or bubbling. Where the substrate underneath is sound and dry, refacing is genuinely economical: new door and drawer fronts plus new face frame skins over solid boxes deliver a new-looking kitchen at a fraction of replacement, and it consumes very little of the coach's weight budget. New fronts and hardware weigh close to what the old ones did.

Repair, Reface or Replace

Three paths, and the box condition picks between them. If the boxes are square, dry and solidly attached, refacing is the best value in RV interior work by a wide margin. New fronts and new hardware change the entire look of a coach while leaving the structure, the plumbing and the appliance openings untouched. It is also the fastest scope in this category, usually a week rather than a month.

Repair makes sense where the problem is localized: a cracked face frame, a stripped hinge cup, a sagging shelf, a drawer box that has come apart at the corners. These are hours of work rather than days, and they restore function without touching the appearance the owner may already be happy with. Not every interior needs changing, and plenty of coaches simply need their existing cabinetry to work again.

Replacement is the answer where boxes are water-damaged, where the layout is changing, or where the existing cabinetry is so light that any hardware upgrade would simply tear out of it. Custom fabrication also opens the door to using the space better, since factory RV cabinetry frequently wastes volume in corners and above appliances. A custom run can recover a surprising amount of usable storage from the same footprint.

Custom Fabrication for Coaches and Working Vehicles

Custom cabinetry in a vehicle is a weight and attachment problem before it is a woodworking problem. Building an RV cabinet like a residential one produces something beautiful and far too heavy, and it puts loads into wall framing that was never designed for them. We build with lightweight cores, hardwood only where it does work, and attachment engineered into located framing.

Working vehicles need different thinking again. A food truck needs surfaces that survive commercial cleaning and stainless where health code demands it. A mobile clinic needs secure, latched storage for equipment that cannot be allowed to move. A cargo van build needs cabinetry that ties into the vehicle's factory mounting points rather than into sheet metal. Those points exist on nearly every van chassis and they were engineered to carry load.

Finish selection follows the environment. Interior surfaces in a coach parked in Orange County sun reach temperatures that break down cheap finishes and yellow some clear coats, so we specify accordingly. Anything near a cooktop, a sink or a wet bath gets a finish rated for it rather than the same product used across the whole build. Using one finish everywhere sprays faster and fails first exactly where it matters most.

How the work runs

  1. 01

    Structural and attachment survey

    Every cabinet is checked for square, for movement at the wall interface and for face frame integrity. Attachment points are probed to determine whether fasteners are in framing or in panel, since that single fact decides whether the repair is hardware or structure.

  2. 02

    Moisture check at bases and wet walls

    Cabinet bases, the floor beneath them and the wall behind any cabinet near plumbing are metered. Swollen bases are treated as evidence rather than as the problem, because rebuilding a cabinet over a leaking supply line simply repeats the failure in a nicer box.

  3. 03

    Framing location and re-anchoring

    Wall structure is located by scan and probe, and cleats or backing are added where framing spacing does not suit the cabinet run. Boxes are re-anchored into real structure with appropriate fasteners, and compromised framing is repaired before any cabinet is reinstalled.

  4. 04

    Box, face frame and drawer repair

    Racked boxes are squared and reinforced, cracked face frames are rebuilt rather than filled, and drawer boxes are re-joined or replaced. Stripped hinge cups are repaired with dowels or epoxy plugs so the new hardware bites into sound material.

    Hardware replacement and adjustment

    Hinges, slides and latches are replaced with hardware rated for vehicle use, including positive mechanical retention on every door and drawer. Euro hinges are adjusted through all axes so reveals are consistent and doors close without being pushed past a bind.

    New fronts, face frame skins and finish are applied where refacing is in scope, with products rated for the heat a closed coach reaches. The unit is then road tested and every door and drawer is checked for retention under motion before handover.

Cabinet Repair questions

My overhead cabinet is pulling away from the wall. Is that dangerous?

Yes, and it should not wait. A loaded upper cabinet separating during travel is a real hazard, and the gap you are seeing means the fasteners are no longer holding in structure. The repair is locating actual framing and re-anchoring into it, sometimes with added backing. Longer screws into the same failed panel is the common shortcut and it does not hold.

Can RV cabinets be refaced instead of replaced?

Very often, and it is usually the best value in an interior refresh. If the boxes are square, dry and solidly attached, new door and drawer fronts, face frame skins and hardware transform the look while leaving structure, plumbing and appliance openings untouched. It also barely touches the coach's cargo capacity, unlike a full cabinetry replacement.

Why do my cabinet doors keep coming open while driving?

Because the latch is not a positive one, or the hinge has drifted enough that the catch no longer engages fully. Magnetic catches and light friction latches hold a door in a stationary house and give up under road motion and a hard stop. RV cabinetry needs push-button or roller catches that require a deliberate action to release, and we replace rather than adjust them.

Can you match new cabinets to my existing ones?

Usually we can get very close, and the honest answer is that exact matching on an older coach is difficult because the original finish has aged in sunlight and the original material may be discontinued. Where a run is visible as a single unit, refacing the whole run gives a far better result than trying to match one new box to twelve faded ones.

My cabinet base is swollen under the sink. What does that mean?

It means the base has been wet, and the important question is the source rather than the cabinet. A weeping supply fitting, a failed sink drain gasket or water tracking from a wall are the usual candidates. We meter the floor and the wall behind before quoting cabinet work, because replacing the base over an active leak produces the same swollen cabinet next year.

Do you build custom cabinetry for food trucks and work vehicles?

Yes. Those builds run on different rules than a coach interior: commercial-grade cleanable surfaces and stainless where health code requires it, secure latched storage for equipment that cannot be allowed to move, and attachment engineered into factory mounting points rather than into sheet metal. Weight and load path are still the governing constraints.
