Hydraulic Jack Systems and How They Actually Fail
An HWH or Lippert hydraulic levelling system is a pump, a reservoir, a set of solenoid valves, four or six cylinders and a controller reading level sensors. The failures cluster in three places. Cylinder rod seals weep, which drops a corner overnight and leaves a puddle nobody notices until the coach is sitting crooked in the morning. Solenoid valves stick, which produces a jack that extends and refuses to retract. And the controller loses its level reference, which produces a system that thinks it has finished when the coach is visibly out.
Fluid condition is the underlying issue on most older systems. Hydraulic oil absorbs moisture, and moisture corrodes valve seats and scores cylinder bores. A reservoir that has never been serviced in a decade holds fluid that looks like coffee, and every component downstream is being fed that. We check fluid condition on every system that comes in, because replacing a cylinder without addressing contaminated fluid is a short-lived repair.
Retraction failures deserve a specific warning. A coach sitting on jacks that will not retract is going nowhere, and forcing it by driving off will bend the jack, tear its mounting from the frame and often damage the floor structure it bolts to. Every system has a documented manual retract procedure, usually a valve that can be opened to bleed a cylinder down. Knowing where that valve is on your coach is worth more than any other single piece of knowledge about the system.

Electric Levelling, Ground Control and Sensor Calibration
Electric systems such as Lippert Ground Control replace hydraulics with an electric motor and a screw jack at each corner. They are simpler, they cannot leak, and they fail in different ways: motors draw high current and burn out, gearboxes strip, and the position sensing loses its reference. On fifth wheels the front landing gear and the levelling system are often integrated, which means a failure takes away both functions at once.
Sensor calibration is the step owners rarely know exists. Every auto-level system stores a zero reference, and if that reference is wrong the system will confidently level the coach to a slope. Recalibration involves putting the coach genuinely level using a measured reference across the floor, not the bubble on the dash, and then teaching the controller that this is zero. A great many complaints about a system that levels badly are solved by a calibration rather than a part.
Overextension is the other common damage mode. A jack extended to its mechanical limit on soft ground puts enormous load on its mount, and repeated cycles crack the frame bracket or tear the mounting from a fifth wheel's I-beam. Blocks under the jack feet are not a nicety, and we repair the resulting bracket damage often enough to say so directly.
Air Levelling and Ride Height on Class A Chassis
Diesel pusher and many gas Class A chassis ride on air bags with height control valves that maintain a set ride height regardless of load. The levelling function uses those same bags, dumping and filling individual corners to bring the coach level. When that system misbehaves, the symptoms are a coach that leans overnight, kneels unexpectedly, or refuses to raise to travel height.
Air leaks are the usual cause and they are found with solution and patience rather than parts. Fittings, air lines chafing on a frame rail, bag sidewalls cracked from age and ozone, and the height control valve linkage itself, which corrodes and seizes so the valve stops responding to actual ride height. A bag that is leaking slowly will hold all day and be flat by morning, which is the pattern owners describe most often.
Ride height is not just about comfort. It sets suspension geometry, it affects headlight aim, and on a coach with camera or radar-based driver assistance it changes the sensor aim relative to the road. Any significant change in ride height is a reason to verify the calibration of anything that looks forward, which is one reason those two departments talk to each other here.
We set ride height against manufacturer measurement points on a level floor, not by eye. The difference between a coach that tracks well and one that wanders is often a couple of inches of ride height that somebody adjusted to make the vehicle look right.
Leaf Springs, Equalizers and the Wet Bolt Problem
Tandem axle trailers carry their load on leaf springs joined by an equalizer that lets the axles share weight over uneven ground. The pivot points are the weak link. Factory bolts on a great many trailers run steel on steel with no lubrication path at all, and after a few thousand miles the bolt and the bushing have worn each other into an oval. The trailer starts to wander, tire wear goes uneven, and eventually the equalizer punches through its own mounting.
Wet bolts solve this, and they are the single best value upgrade available on a travel trailer or fifth wheel. A wet bolt has a grease zerk and a passage that delivers lubricant to the bushing, along with a bronze bushing that carries the load properly. Combined with a heavy duty equalizer, they turn a wear item into a maintainable one. The conversion is straightforward on most trailers and pays for itself the first time you do not have to replace a spring hanger.
Spring hanger failure is the outcome worth avoiding. Hangers are welded to the frame, and once a worn pivot starts hammering, the weld cracks and the hanger tears loose. That is a fabrication repair rather than a bolt-on, and it happens at highway speed with a loaded trailer. Any trailer showing uneven tire wear across a tandem axle deserves the pivots checked before anything else is investigated.

Independent Suspension, Shocks and Handling Upgrades
Independent suspension conversions replace the leaf spring and equalizer arrangement entirely with trailing arms and either rubber torsion or coil springs. The ride improvement is genuine and it shows up as less damage inside the coach, since the cabinetry and appliances stop being shaken by every expansion joint. The cost is significant and the installation is a structural job, so it makes sense on a trailer worth keeping for years rather than one being prepared for sale.
Shock absorbers are the cheaper half of the same conversation. Many trailers leave the factory with no shocks at all, which means the springs are undamped and the trailer oscillates after every bump. Adding shocks with proper brackets settles the whole vehicle noticeably. On motorhomes, replacing tired original shocks with a quality gas unit is the highest value handling improvement available for the money.
Steering stabilizers and track bars occupy a similar niche on Class A and Class C coaches. A front track bar controls lateral movement of the axle relative to the body, a rear track bar does the same at the back, and a steering stabilizer damps the wander that makes a driver work constantly on a crosswind day. None of these fix a genuine mechanical fault, and we are direct about that. They improve a vehicle that is already sound.
Hitch Damage, Overload and Insurance
Suspension and levelling damage from a collision or a road hazard is usually straightforward on a claim, since the cause is a single event. What gets argued is whether a bent axle, a cracked hanger or a torn jack mount was caused by the incident or was a pre-existing condition, and the answer generally comes down to what the documentation shows.
We measure and photograph before disassembly on any claim job. Axle alignment readings, ride height at each corner, frame measurements and photographs of the failure surfaces themselves. A cracked weld that shows fresh, bright fracture surface across its entire face tells a different story than one with corrosion staining across half the crack, and adjusters respond to that evidence when it is presented properly.
Overload is the exclusion to be aware of. Nearly every policy excludes damage caused by exceeding the vehicle's rated capacity, and a trailer that has been run consistently over its axle rating will show it in the spring geometry and the tire wear. We report what we find honestly. It is better to know that a trailer is carrying more than it should than to repair the symptom twice.

How the work runs

Level floor baseline
The vehicle goes onto a known level surface and we measure ride height at every corner, frame height at reference points and the actual attitude of the floor. Without a true reference, no levelling diagnosis means anything.

System pressure and function test
Hydraulic systems are tested for pump output, valve function and cylinder holding under pressure with the fluid condition assessed. Electric systems get motor current draw, gearbox condition and sensor output checked at each corner.

Structural inspection of mounts
Every jack mount, spring hanger, equalizer and shackle is inspected for cracked welds, elongated holes and deformation. Damage here is the reason a system failed as often as it is a consequence of the failure.

Repair and upgrade
Seals, cylinders, valves, motors and controllers replaced as diagnosed. Wet bolt and bushing conversions, heavy duty equalizers, shock fitment and hanger repair by welding where the structure requires it.

Calibration and alignment
Auto-level controllers are recalibrated against a measured level reference rather than a dash bubble. Trailer axle alignment is measured and corrected, and ride height is set to manufacturer specification.

Cycle testing under load
The system is cycled repeatedly through full extension and retraction with the coach loaded, and left standing to confirm it holds position overnight rather than passing a single test and settling later.

My jacks will not retract and the coach is stuck. What do I do?
Do not attempt to drive it off the jacks. That will bend the jack, tear its mount from the frame and often damage the floor structure. Every system has a documented manual retract procedure, generally a bleed valve or a manual override at the pump. Find it in your manual before you need it. Once the coach is mobile, bring it in and we will diagnose why the system failed rather than just resetting it.
Why does my auto-level system leave the coach out of level?
Usually the stored level reference is wrong. Every controller keeps a zero point, and if that was set on a sloped surface the system will faithfully reproduce that slope forever. Recalibration means putting the coach genuinely level using a measured reference across the floor and teaching the controller that this is zero. It is often a calibration rather than a failed component.
Are wet bolts actually worth doing on my travel trailer?
They are one of the best value upgrades available on any tandem axle trailer. Factory pivot bolts typically run steel on steel with no way to lubricate them, so they wear into an oval and the trailer starts wandering and scrubbing tires. Wet bolts add a grease passage and a bronze bushing that carries load properly. The conversion prevents the spring hanger failures that turn into a welding job.
Is an independent suspension conversion worth the money?
On a trailer you plan to keep for years, frequently yes. The ride improvement is real and it shows up as less damage to cabinetry, appliances and interior finish over time, because the coach stops being shaken by every joint in the road. On a trailer you are preparing to sell, the money rarely comes back. We will tell you which situation you are in.
Can you work on the chassis suspension of a motorhome?
Yes, on the suspension itself: shocks, air bags, height control valves, track bars, steering stabilizers, bushings and ride height setting. What this shop does not perform is powertrain work, so anything involving the propulsion system goes to a chassis specialist. Keeping that line clear means you always know which side of the vehicle we are working on.
My coach wanders on the freeway. Is that a suspension problem?
Often, and it is usually several small things rather than one large one. Worn shocks, incorrect ride height, tire pressure set by the sidewall maximum instead of by actual axle weight, missing track bars and a steering system with accumulated play all contribute. We weigh, measure ride height, inspect the whole steering and suspension path and give you a prioritized list rather than selling a single accessory.
