Flooring Replacement in San Juan Capistrano
RV flooring replacement removes the original vinyl or carpet, verifies and prepares the subfloor, and installs new material chosen for thermal movement, weight and slide clearance. Luxury vinyl plank, sheet vinyl and commercial-grade goods are specified against how the coach is stored, because a closed RV interior reaches temperatures residential flooring is not rated for.
What owners notice first
- A ridge or buckle running across the floor that appeared during warm weather
- Seams that have opened, curled at the edges or lifted at a doorway
- Staples or fastener heads telegraphing through vinyl as visible bumps
- Soft or springy areas underfoot, which means subfloor work before any flooring work
- Carpet that has held odour and cannot be cleaned back to acceptable
- Sheet vinyl that has torn at a wheel well cut or around a plumbing penetration
- A slide room that has begun scarring the floor along its travel path
- Cracked or lifted flooring at the wet bath threshold where water sits
Heat, Expansion and Why Residential Flooring Fails in an RV
A closed coach parked in the sun in Orange County routinely reaches 140 degrees inside, and the floor surface can exceed that. Luxury vinyl plank is a thermoplastic composite, and it expands and contracts measurably across that range. Installed as a floating floor without adequate perimeter expansion gap, it buckles, and the buckle appears as a ridge across the middle of the coach that was not there in March.
Manufacturer specifications on residential LVP assume a conditioned interior between roughly 60 and 80 degrees. Almost no RV lives in that range. That is why product selection matters more here than in a house, and why our shop specifies goods rated for the temperature swing or installs glue-down rather than floating where the span makes floating risky. Span length is the variable owners never consider and the one that decides the method.
Perimeter detail is the practical answer. Expansion gap has to exist and it has to be genuinely open, not packed with adhesive or pinched by a fastened trim strip. It gets covered by base trim or a shoe moulding that hides the gap without closing it. Skipping that detail is the single most common cause of RV floors that buckle in their first summer.
- Luxury vinyl plank, durable and repairable by the plank, needs disciplined expansion allowance
- Sheet vinyl, seamless and cost-effective, hardest to repair and prone to showing subfloor imperfection
- Glue-down LVT, eliminates floating-floor movement at the cost of a harder future removal
- Commercial-grade goods for food trucks and clinics where cleaning chemistry and slip rating matter
- Carpet in bedrooms only, where owners want it and where soil load is lowest
Subfloor Preparation Is Most of the Job
Original RV flooring is typically stapled, glued or both, and removing it well is more work than laying the new material. Every staple has to come out, since a single proud staple telegraphs through vinyl within weeks and eventually wears through it. Adhesive residue has to be scraped or ground back to a consistent surface, because new adhesive over old creates a bond only as good as the failing layer beneath.
Flatness gets verified, not assumed. Most manufacturers specify a tolerance around 3/16 inch over ten feet, and RV subfloors frequently miss it at panel joints and around wheel wells. Low areas get filled with a compatible patch compound and high areas get sanded, and doing this is what separates a floor that looks flat from one that reads every defect under raking light.
This is also the moment moisture gets confirmed. The subfloor is metered across its full area before a single plank goes down, because installing over a subfloor above the structural threshold means tearing out brand new flooring in a year. Any reading that fails moves the job into subfloor repair before flooring resumes. That is a change in scope and a change in price, and we say so before proceeding.

Height, Clearance and the Things New Flooring Breaks
New flooring adds height, and in an RV that height matters in four places. Slide rooms travel with minimal floor clearance and a thicker floor can stop a room from retracting. Interior doors are cut with almost no gap. The entry step relationship changes. And appliance toe kicks and slide-out floor rollers were set to the original thickness. All four get measured before a single sample board is ordered.
The slide path is the one that causes real damage. A room that drags on new flooring will destroy the flooring, chew the room's lower edge and load the mechanism, and the failure shows up as three separate problems the owner does not connect. Measuring clearance with the room cycled, before material is selected, is a five minute step that prevents all of it.
Transitions do the reconciliation. Where a slide room floor meets the main floor, where flooring meets a wet bath pan, or where a step meets the living area, a proper transition profile handles the height change and the expansion movement at once. Butting materials together and caulking the joint fails quickly because that joint has to move. Movement at a transition is not a defect, it is the assembly doing what it was designed to do.
Furniture, Appliances and What Has to Come Out
Doing a floor properly means the floor is empty. Dinettes, sofas, theatre seating and captain's chairs on a motorhome are bolted through the floor, and in many cases their fasteners pass into frame members. Those come out, get set aside, and go back on new hardware with the penetrations resealed, since a bolt hole through a floor is a moisture path if it is left open.
Appliances are more nuanced. A refrigerator generally has to come out, and doing so means disconnecting LP and 12V, which is technician work rather than something to improvise. Toilets have to be pulled to floor a wet bath correctly, and reinstalling one means a new flange seal rather than reusing a compressed one. A reused toilet flange seal is one of the most common causes of a rotted bathroom floor we find.
The alternative is what the industry calls flooring around, cutting the new material to the furniture footprint and leaving everything in place. It is cheaper and it is visibly cheaper. It also means that when the dinette is eventually removed, there is a rectangle of missing floor. We quote both honestly and tell owners which one we would choose. Most people pick removal once the two numbers are sitting side by side.
Weight, Sound and Comfort Underfoot
Flooring weight is easy to underestimate because it is spread across a large area. Thin sheet vinyl runs a fraction of a pound per square foot, mid-weight LVP lands around a pound and a quarter, and thick engineered or tile products go higher. Across three hundred square feet, the difference between selections can be two or three hundred pounds against a cargo capacity that may only be fifteen hundred.
Sound is a genuine quality-of-life issue in a metal and composite box. Hard flooring installed directly on a thin subfloor produces a drum, and every footstep transmits. An acoustic underlayment rated for the product adds a small amount of height and weight and makes a substantial difference in how the coach feels, particularly in a unit with a bedroom over a living area.
Slip resistance deserves attention in specific places. Wet bath floors, entry areas and the galley in a food truck have real slip exposure, and commercial products carry a slip rating for exactly that reason. Choosing a beautiful gloss product for a shower surround is a decision owners regret the first time the coach is used in the rain. Slip rating is published on commercial goods and it is worth asking for.
Work Vehicles, Clinics and Commercial Interiors
Food trucks and mobile kitchens are governed by health code rather than taste. Flooring has to be non-absorbent, cleanable, coved at the wall junction in many jurisdictions, and able to survive commercial degreasers without breaking down. Sheet goods with heat-welded seams and a coved base are the usual answer, and the detail at the wall is what an inspector actually looks at.
Mobile clinics and medical bodies add infection control to the list. Seamless welded flooring with sealed penetrations, chemical resistance to hospital-grade disinfectants and integral coving are standard requirements, and equipment anchoring has to pass through the flooring without creating an uncleanable joint. Anchor points get sealed as part of the flooring installation rather than drilled afterward, since a penetration made later defeats the seamless assembly and is exactly what an inspector goes looking for.
Cargo and utility vehicles have a different problem entirely, which is abrasion. Wheeled equipment, dropped tools and constant loading destroy consumer flooring quickly, so those builds get commercial-grade or purpose-built surfaces selected against the actual traffic. Specifying a residential product in a working vehicle is how a two year floor becomes a six month floor. Commercial goods cost more per square foot and considerably less per year of service.

Process
How the work runs
01
Moisture verification and subfloor assessment
The subfloor is metered across its full area and probed at wheel wells, slide paths and around plumbing penetrations. Any reading above the structural threshold moves the job into subfloor repair first, because flooring installed over a wet deck is a repeat visit rather than a repair.
02
Clearance measurement and material selection
Slide travel clearance, door undercut, step relationship and toe kick heights are measured with rooms cycled. Material is then selected against those numbers plus the coach's weight budget and how it is stored, rather than from a sample board alone.
03
Furniture, appliance and fixture removal
Bolted furniture, the refrigerator, the toilet and any fixture penetrating the floor are removed, with LP and 12V disconnections handled by a technician. Floor penetrations are documented so they can be resealed properly on reassembly rather than left open under new material.
04
Demolition, staple removal and flattening
Old flooring, adhesive and every staple come out, then the deck is patched and sanded to a verified flatness tolerance. This is the largest labor block in most flooring jobs and it is what determines whether the finished floor reads flat under low-angle light.
05
Installation with expansion and transitions
Underlayment and flooring are installed with a genuinely open perimeter expansion gap, and transitions are fitted at slide thresholds, wet bath edges and step junctions so height changes and thermal movement are both handled by a profile rather than by caulk.
06
Reinstallation, sealing and slide verification
Furniture and fixtures go back on new hardware with every floor penetration resealed, and the toilet is set on a fresh flange seal. Slides are cycled repeatedly to confirm clearance, doors are checked for swing, and the finished floor is inspected under raking light.

Flooring Replacement questions
Will luxury vinyl plank buckle in an RV?
It will if it is installed like a residential floor. A closed coach in this climate reaches temperatures well outside what residential LVP is rated for, and a floating floor without a genuinely open expansion gap has nowhere to go but up. We specify products rated for the swing, use glue-down where the span makes floating risky, and leave a real perimeter gap covered by trim.
Can you install flooring without removing the furniture?
We can, and we will tell you what it costs you. Flooring around fixed furniture is cheaper and visibly cheaper, and it leaves a rectangle of missing floor for whoever removes that dinette later. Removing furniture also lets us reseal every floor penetration, which matters because a bolt hole through a subfloor is a moisture path.
How much weight does new flooring add?
It depends entirely on the product. Thin sheet vinyl is a fraction of a pound per square foot, mid-weight vinyl plank is around a pound and a quarter, and thicker engineered or tile products go well beyond that. Across a typical coach floor the difference between selections can be two or three hundred pounds, which we enter into the weight schedule during selection.
My slide scrapes the new floor. What went wrong?
Clearance was not measured before the material was chosen. Slide rooms travel with very little floor clearance, and even a quarter inch of added height can put the room in contact. The correction is either a thinner material through the slide path or an adjustment to the room's travel and rollers, and it is far cheaper to measure first than to fix after.
Should I fix a soft floor before replacing the flooring?
Always, and it is not close. New flooring over compromised subfloor hides the problem while the rot continues, and the eventual repair now includes tearing out flooring that was just paid for. Metering the subfloor is the first step of every flooring job we do, and a failed reading moves the work into subfloor repair before anything decorative happens.
What flooring works in a food truck?
Commercial sheet goods with heat-welded seams and integral coving at the wall junction, chosen for chemical resistance to degreasers and for slip rating. Health inspectors look specifically at the wall junction and at any penetration for equipment anchoring, so the detailing matters as much as the material. Consumer flooring in a commercial kitchen does not survive the cleaning regime.
