Why Southern California Coaches Still Get Hail Claims

How Hail Damages Each Surface Differently
Aluminium siding dents and holds the dent. The panel is thin, it is bonded or riveted over framing, and access to the back side is limited or nonexistent, which rules out most conventional paintless dent techniques that depend on pushing from behind. Repair usually means panel replacement on badly hit sections and careful filler and refinish work on lighter ones.
Fibreglass responds by fracturing rather than deforming. A hail strike on a gelcoat surface produces a star crack or a subsurface bruise that may not be obvious until the panel is wet or lit at a low angle. Those fractures propagate, and a coach that looks lightly damaged in a walk-around inspection can map out at three times the count under proper lighting.
Roof membrane hides the worst of it. EPDM and TPO absorb impact without tearing in many cases, but the strike bruises the material and compresses the decking underneath. Months later the bruise becomes a pinhole. This is why roof impact is the most frequently missed item on a first carrier inspection: nobody climbs up, and from ground level the roof looks untouched.

Dent Mapping and Documentation That Survives Review
A hail estimate lives or dies on its map. The roof gets the same treatment as the sides, which is where most claims gain their real value. Not every dented panel gets replaced. Light, shallow damage on a flat aluminium section in an area that will be refinished anyway is often better addressed with metal work and filler than with a replacement panel that introduces two new seams. Heavy damage, damage crossing a seam, or damage on a panel that carries a factory graphic usually justifies replacement.
Fibreglass repair follows different rules. Gelcoat stars are ground out, laminated back with compatible resin and cloth where structure is affected, then faired and refinished. Blending matters enormously here because a repaired fibreglass panel next to an original one will show every difference in gloss and texture under Orange County sun, which is unforgiving light. Blending outward into adjacent panels costs hours and it is what separates a repair from a patch.
Roof remediation is the piece owners underestimate. Where membrane is bruised but intact and decking meters dry, a full reseal and recoat is appropriate and it is what the price band on this page reflects. Where impacts have breached the membrane or the decking has taken water, the job moves onto the membrane replacement band and the scope changes accordingly.

How Carriers Treat Hail on an RV
Hail is a comprehensive claim, not a collision claim, which usually means a different deductible and no at-fault consequence. That distinction is worth confirming with the carrier before a claim is filed, because owners occasionally report hail damage under the wrong coverage and end up with a worse outcome than the policy actually provided for. Confirming the coverage line first costs one phone call and can change the deductible entirely.
Valuation method drives the settlement more than the estimate does. A policy paying actual cash value depreciates the repair, while a replacement cost policy does not, and agreed value policies on higher-end coaches behave differently again. Knowing which one applies before the adjuster's first visit changes how an owner should approach the entire process. Total loss thresholds arrive faster on older units than owners expect. A twelve year old travel trailer with heavy hail across every panel and a compromised roof can exceed its actual cash value on the estimate alone. Timing, Storage and Preventing the Next One
Move quickly on a roof, slowly on cosmetics. A bruised membrane that has not yet breached is a manageable reseal, and the same membrane after a wet winter is a decking job. Cosmetic dent work on sidewalls can reasonably wait for parts availability and scheduling, but anything involving the roof surface should be assessed before the rainy season rather than after it.
Storage choices change exposure meaningfully. Covered storage is the obvious answer where it is available and affordable. Where it is not, parking orientation matters more than owners think, since a coach angled away from prevailing weather takes fewer impacts on its most expensive surfaces, which are the roof and the front cap. Backing in rather than nosing in flips which end takes the weather, and it costs nothing to change.
Document the coach before it needs documenting. A set of dated photographs of a clean, undamaged roof and sidewalls, refreshed annually, is the strongest single piece of evidence an owner can bring to a hail claim. It establishes prior condition, which is exactly the point carriers push back on when damage is reported months after a storm. Ten minutes with a phone once a year is the cheapest documentation an owner can produce.

Usually yes, since RV policies follow the vehicle rather than a location. What matters is establishing a date of loss and tying it to a weather event, which gets harder the longer you wait. Can paintless dent repair be used on RV hail damage?
Rarely, and it is one of the biggest differences between RV and automotive hail work. Conventional dent techniques depend on reaching the back side of a panel to push, and RV sidewalls are bonded laminate assemblies with framing, insulation and interior panels behind them. Most RV hail repair is therefore metal work with filler and refinish, or panel replacement outright.
The adjuster said my roof was fine. Should I get it checked anyway?
Yes. Roof impact is the most commonly missed item on a first inspection, largely because the roof does not get walked. Membrane bruises without tearing, so from ground level nothing looks wrong, and the bruise becomes a pinhole months later. Is it worth repairing hail damage on an older trailer?
It depends entirely on whether the roof was breached. Cosmetic dents on a fifteen year old trailer are often something an owner reasonably lives with.
