How does a trailer frame carry load, and where does it fail?
Most RV trailer frames are steel I-beam or channel main rails with crossmembers welded between them, an A-frame at the tongue on a conventional trailer, or an upswept gooseneck section on a fifth wheel. The body sits on top and is fastened down, and the whole assembly relies on the frame for every bit of its structural integrity. Unlike a unibody vehicle, the box contributes almost nothing to stiffness once the frame flexes.
Failure concentrates at three kinds of location. First, welded joints, especially where crossmembers meet main rails and where spring hangers attach, because a weld is a stress riser and road cycling works it. Second, anywhere the frame was modified after manufacture, including holes drilled through a main rail flange for wiring or plumbing, which is a remarkably effective way to start a crack. Third, points of concentrated load such as slide mechanism mounts, generator platforms and heavy appliance locations.
Fifth wheels add the pin box and its supporting structure, which is where the entire vertical and longitudinal load between trailer and truck passes. On a heavily loaded fifth wheel that is thousands of pounds of pin weight plus every acceleration and braking event, all going through a bolted or welded assembly at the front of an upswept frame. Cracking in the upswept section is a known pattern on some builds and it is genuinely serious.

Axles, springs and suspension on a towed unit
The standard RV trailer suspension is a leaf spring setup: springs shackled to hangers welded on the frame, with an equalizer between the front and rear springs on a tandem axle so the two axles can share load over uneven ground. It is simple, cheap and effective, and every part of it is a wear item. Bushings wear oval, shackle bolts wear undersize, equalizers develop play, and the springs themselves lose arch and eventually crack a leaf.
The symptom owners notice first is usually tyre wear, and it is often misread. Uneven wear across a tandem axle set means the axles are no longer parallel or the suspension is no longer sharing load, which comes from a bent axle, a sagged spring, or a worn equalizer. Replacing the tyres without correcting the cause simply destroys the new set. Feathering, cupping and inside-edge wear each point at a different underlying condition.
Bent axles come from overloading and from impacts, and once bent they stay bent. A trailer axle has a designed camber that flattens under load, so a bent one will show visibly incorrect tyre contact patches either at the tread edges or in the centre. Straightening is sometimes possible on a heavier axle, and replacement is usually the right answer on a standard RV axle because the tube is thin.
Upgrading is a legitimate option. Rubber torsion axles, heavier spring packs, wet bolt kits with grease fittings and shock absorber kits all address the underlying problem, which is an unsprung, undamped suspension built to a price. Electric brakes and wheel bearings: the service everyone skips
Electric drum brakes are the near-universal standard on RV trailers, and they work by energizing a magnet that drags against the drum face, which levers the shoes outward. That means brake performance depends on magnet condition, shoe condition, drum surface condition and the electrical circuit that feeds the magnets, and any one of the four can quietly reduce braking on one wheel without the driver noticing.
Testing is straightforward and it is rarely done. Magnet resistance is measured with a meter and compared to specification; a magnet reading out of range is on its way out. Shoe thickness and drum wear are checked visually with the drum off. The circuit is checked for voltage drop, because corroded connections at the axle brake wire junction are extremely common and produce weak braking that no amount of controller adjustment fixes.
Bearings are the other half of the same job, since the drum has to come off for either. Bearing grease separates over time, and separated grease does not lubricate. Water intrusion past a failed inner seal contaminates it. Every bearing repack includes inspecting the races for pitting or spalling, replacing the inner seal, packing with fresh grease of the correct type, and setting preload properly, because an over-tightened bearing runs hot and a loose one hammers itself apart.
The failure this prevents is severe. A seized bearing at highway speed can shear the spindle and separate the wheel from the trailer. OCRV Center recommends the brake and bearing service on an annual or twelve thousand mile basis, whichever comes first, and more often on trailers that see wet launches or coastal storage.

Couplers, pin boxes and the hitch connection
The connection between tow vehicle and trailer takes every acceleration, braking and cornering load in both directions, plus the vertical tongue or pin weight, plus the chucking oscillation that a fifth wheel generates on uneven pavement. On a conventional trailer the coupler is a formed steel casting at the point of the A-frame with a latch mechanism. On a fifth wheel it is a pin box bolted to the upswept frame with a king pin that engages the hitch jaws.
Coupler failures show up as excessive play between the coupler and the ball, wear in the latch mechanism, or cracking at the coupler-to-A-frame weld. A worn coupler produces a clunk on every transition from acceleration to deceleration, which owners often blame on the hitch or the truck. It is measurable: the coupler should not move perceptibly on a correctly sized ball once latched.
Pin boxes wear at the king pin itself and at the mounting bolt holes, which elongate under repeated load. Air ride and rubber-cushioned pin boxes add another set of components that wear. Because the pin box is a bolted assembly rather than a weldment on most units, replacement is straightforward when the frame it mounts to is sound, and a structural repair when it is not.
Weight distribution hitches on conventional trailers deserve a mention. A correctly set up weight distribution and sway control system changes the load path through the A-frame significantly, and an incorrectly adjusted one concentrates load in ways the frame was not designed for. Toy haulers and the loads they impose
A toy hauler is a trailer with a garage, and the garage changes everything structurally. The rear wall becomes a ramp door, which removes a significant amount of the box stiffness that a normal rear wall provides. The floor in the garage has to carry point loads from motorcycle or side-by-side tyres rather than distributed household loads. And the cargo itself is heavy, mobile and located at the extreme rear of the trailer, which is the worst place for it from a stability standpoint.
Ramp doors fail at the hinge, at the cable or strut assist, and at the seal. The hinge runs the full width of the trailer and carries the door plus whatever load is on it when the ramp is used as a patio, which many owners do. Hinge fastener pull-through into a laminated rear wall is a common repair, and doing it properly means reinforcing the wall structure behind the hinge rather than simply installing longer screws.
Garage flooring takes abuse that no other RV floor sees: tyre loading, fuel and oil spills, tie-down anchor loads and the impact of loading and unloading. Anchors that pull out of the floor structure are a structural repair to the subfloor rather than a fastener replacement. Diamond plate or coated flooring gets damaged and refinished on a schedule that has nothing to do with the rest of the interior.
Weight distribution matters more here than on any other towable. Cargo loaded entirely behind the axles reduces pin or tongue weight and induces sway, and the fix is loading discipline rather than hardware. Cargo, utility and equipment trailer repair
Working trailers come in with a different damage profile from recreational ones because they are used hard, loaded to capacity and often stored outdoors permanently. Enclosed cargo trailers develop skin damage along the sides from loading equipment, corner cap failures, roof seam leaks and rear door problems. Open utility and equipment trailers develop deck rot, bent side rails, ramp damage and frame corrosion.
Corrosion is the dominant issue on this class in coastal Orange County. Steel frames, painted rather than galvanized, spend years outdoors in salt-bearing air. Rust starts at every chip, weld and drilled hole, and it works under the deck boards and inside the tubing where it is invisible until a member fails. Treatment means media blasting or mechanical removal back to sound steel, then a proper primer and coating system rather than paint over rust.
Deck replacement is common and it is worth doing properly. Pressure treated lumber, correct fastener spacing, and a stainless or hot dip fastener that will not corrode against treated wood chemistry. What towing does to a trailer body over time
Road input does not stop at the suspension. Whatever the springs do not absorb goes into the frame and then into the box, and over tens of thousands of miles that continuous vibration works on every joint in the structure. Screws back out. Sealant beads that were flexible when new become rigid and crack at the flex points. Interior trim separates. Cabinet doors fall out of adjustment. Delamination that would never start from a static condition begins at a stress concentration.
The pattern is diagnostic. Damage that appears symmetrically on both sides, concentrated near the axles or at the front and rear extremes, is vibration-related. Damage concentrated on one side or radiating from a single point is impact-related. Telling them apart matters for insurance, because one is a covered event and the other is accumulated wear.
Fifth wheels get an additional load path through the front of the trailer where chucking, the fore and aft oscillation between truck and trailer on uneven pavement, cycles the pin box and the upswept frame section repeatedly. Owners feel it as a jerk on expansion joints. The structure feels it as a fatigue cycle, several thousand times per trip.
The countermeasure is inspection rather than avoidance. Retorquing fasteners, renewing sealant on a schedule, servicing suspension components before bushings go, and catching a cracked spring hanger while it is a weld repair instead of after it has torn out a section of frame rail. Questions
How often should trailer bearings be repacked?
Annually or every twelve thousand miles, whichever comes first, and more often for trailers stored near the coast or used at wet launches. Grease separates over time and separated grease does not lubricate. Every repack should include inspecting races for pitting, replacing the inner seal, and setting preload to specification, since both over-tightening and looseness destroy a bearing.
My trailer brakes feel weak. Is it the controller?
Usually not. Weak braking most often traces to magnet wear, shoe and drum condition, or voltage drop in the brake circuit at the corroded axle wire junction. Those are measured with a meter and a drum-off inspection rather than adjusted around. Turning up a controller to compensate for a failing magnet masks a fault that is getting worse on one wheel.
