Weight Budget Comes First, Not Last

Every coach carries a cargo carrying capacity number on its federal weight sticker, and it is the difference between the gross vehicle weight rating and the unit as built with full fluids. On a lot of modern travel trailers that figure is under fifteen hundred pounds, and a full fresh water tank alone eats a third of it. Remodels spend from the same account, and nothing about a design drawing announces that.

Material substitutions are where the pounds hide. A granite countertop run replacing laminate can add well over two hundred pounds. Solid hardwood flooring in place of thin vinyl adds roughly a pound and a half per square foot. Residential appliances weigh substantially more than their RV equivalents, and a residential refrigerator swap on its own can consume several hundred pounds along with a much larger inverter load.

Our estimators tally the delta before anything is ordered, item by item, in and out. That schedule goes to the owner alongside the design so the trade-offs are explicit. Sometimes the answer is porcelain-look composite instead of stone; sometimes it is accepting the weight and reducing what gets carried. Either is a legitimate decision. Discovering it at the scale house is not.

How RV Walls Are Built and Where You Can Attach

Most modern coaches use vacuum-bonded laminated sidewalls: an exterior skin, block foam insulation, aluminium or wood framing members, and an interior panel of Azdel composite or thin lauan. The whole assembly is glued under pressure into a single stressed panel. It is strong in the plane of the wall and close to worthless as a fastening surface between framing members.

That geometry dictates the entire design. Upper cabinets have to land on framing, and the framing spacing is fixed by where the factory put windows, slide openings and the roof rafters above. Anyone who has watched an overhead cabinet pull out of a wall on a mountain descent has seen what happens when a screw was driven into panel instead of structure. We locate framing with a scan and mark it before layout, not during install.

Older stick-and-tin trailers behave differently and often more forgivingly. Wood-framed walls with an aluminium skin offer more attachment options but bring their own problem, which is that the framing may already be compromised at the lower rail. Any remodel on a unit like that includes a structural assessment of the frame before new weight goes onto it. Lower rail rot on an older trailer is common and stays invisible until the interior panel comes off.

Slide Clearance, Door Swing and the Half Inch That Ruins Everything

A slide room passes within a fraction of an inch of the floor and of any cabinetry it travels beside. Adding a quarter inch of new flooring under a slide path or a half inch of new facing to a cabinet run in its way produces a room that no longer retracts, and the discovery usually happens at the worst possible moment. Clearance mapping is a measured step in every remodel we do, not a check at the end.

Door swings compound it. Bathroom doors, wardrobe doors and entry doors on RVs are sized with almost no margin, and new flooring raises the finished floor height enough to bind a door that previously cleared. The correct fix is planning the floor build-up and undercutting doors during the job, rather than shaving a bathroom door in the driveway after delivery.

Appliance openings are the third trap. RV appliance dimensions are not residential dimensions, and a cooktop or refrigerator that fits the specification sheet can still fail on depth once the wall behind it is accounted for, or on the swing radius of an adjacent cabinet door. Every appliance in a remodel gets dry-fitted or measured against a full-size template before the cabinetry around it is committed.

Electrical Load, 12V Conversion and What the System Can Actually Carry

Remodels change electrical demand more than owners anticipate. Swapping incandescent and halogen fixtures for LED reduces draw substantially and is nearly always worth doing during a rebuild, since the walls and ceiling are already open. Adding a residential refrigerator, an induction cooktop or a washer-dryer moves in the opposite direction and typically forces a conversation about inverter capacity and house bank sizing.

Circuit capacity is finite and it is documented. The distribution panel in a coach has a defined number of breakers at defined ratings, and the shore power service is either 30 amp or 50 amp. A remodel that adds load without checking those numbers produces a coach that trips a breaker every time the microwave and the air conditioner run together, which the owner then interprets as a defect.

Doing wiring while the interior is apart is the entire argument for planning it early. Running a new circuit through a closed wall means removing finish work that was just installed. Running it while cabinets are out and panels are off costs a fraction of that. Our sequencing puts electrical rough-in before finish carpentry for exactly this reason. Owners never see that stage, which is probably why it is the one nobody asks about.

Sequence, Dust Control and Why Order Matters

Interior rebuilds follow a fixed order because the alternative is redoing work. Demolition and removal come first, then structural and moisture repair, then electrical and plumbing rough-in, then subfloor and flooring, then cabinetry, then countertops, then upholstery and soft goods, then trim and final fit. Skipping ahead to visible items because the owner wants to see progress is how a project ends up with new flooring scarred by cabinet installation.

Dust separation is not a nicety in a vehicle. Sawdust and sanding residue get into the furnace ducting, the roof vent housings and the refrigerator cooling unit, and once it is in the ducting it comes back out on the first cold night. Our bays isolate cutting operations and the coach's HVAC openings are masked through the entire build rather than cleaned at the end.

Protection of what stays is its own line item. Windows, the dash on a motorhome, exposed exterior surfaces and any cabinetry being retained get covered and stay covered. A remodel that damages the surfaces it was not supposed to touch has cost the owner money regardless of how good the new work looks. Masking and covering appear on our estimates as real hours because that is what they are.

Partial Remodels, Staging and Getting Real Value

Full gut rebuilds are not the only path and often not the smartest one. A great deal of the visual improvement in an RV interior comes from three items: flooring, upholstery and the cabinet faces. Replacing those while keeping sound cabinet boxes and the existing layout delivers most of the transformation at a fraction of a full rebuild, and it consumes far less of the weight budget.

Staging across two visits works when it is planned as one project. Structural and moisture work plus flooring in the first phase, cabinetry and soft goods in the second, with the design and material selection locked at the start so nothing has to be re-cut to fit. What does not work is treating each visit as an independent job, which produces mismatched materials and duplicated labor.

Resale reality deserves a mention. Heavy personalization rarely returns its cost when a coach sells, while sound structure, dry subfloor and clean neutral finishes do. Owners planning to keep a unit for another decade should build what they want. Owners planning to sell in two years get better value from restoration than from reinvention, and we will say so during design.

How the work runs

  1. 01

    Assessment, weight sticker and moisture baseline

    The federal weight sticker is read and cargo capacity calculated, then the coach is metered throughout: subfloor, lower wall rails, slide floors and around every window. This produces the two numbers that govern the whole project, available payload and existing moisture, before any design conversation begins.

  2. 02

    Design, material selection and weight schedule

    Layout and finishes are developed against measured clearances, framing locations and appliance dimensions. Every material gets a weight entered into an in-and-out schedule, so the owner approves the design and the payload consequence at the same time rather than discovering them separately.

  3. 03

    Demolition, structural and moisture correction

    The interior is stripped in a controlled sequence with HVAC openings masked. Compromised subfloor, wall rail or framing found during demolition is repaired and dried to spec before anything new is installed, and findings are photographed and quoted as a documented change rather than absorbed silently.

  4. 04

    Electrical and plumbing rough-in

    New circuits, 12V runs, lighting and any plumbing relocation happen while walls and cabinet bays are open. Panel capacity and shore service rating are verified against the new load, and inverter or house bank changes are made now rather than retrofitted through finished walls later.

  5. 05

    Flooring, cabinetry and countertops

    Subfloor is levelled and flooring goes down with the correct expansion allowance, then cabinetry is set and fastened into located framing. Countertops are templated to the installed cabinets rather than to drawings, and slide clearances are re-verified with the room cycled before anything is finalized.

  6. 06

    Soft goods, trim, road test and handover

    Upholstery, window treatments and trim complete the build. The coach is then road tested, every door and drawer latch is checked for retention under motion, slides are cycled repeatedly, and the finished unit is documented photographically with a maintained copy of the weight schedule.

How much does a full RV interior remodel cost?

The band on this page reflects real spread, because a cosmetic refresh and a full gut rebuild are different projects sharing a name. Flooring, upholstery and cabinet refacing on a mid-size trailer sits near the bottom. A complete Class A rebuild with new cabinetry, stone counters, residential appliances and an electrical upgrade sits at the top. We scope in phases so the number reflects your coach rather than an average.

Will remodeling void anything on my coach?

Structural modifications, added electrical load and appliance changes can affect manufacturer coverage and can affect insurance valuation, and those are conversations to have with your manufacturer and carrier before work starts. What we control is doing the work to a standard that does not create problems: attachment into framing, load calculated against panel capacity, and everything documented for your file.

Can I put residential appliances in my RV?

Often yes, with two caveats that decide it. The first is weight, since residential units are substantially heavier and consume cargo capacity permanently. The second is power, because a residential refrigerator needs inverter capacity and house bank sizing that many coaches do not have as built. We run both numbers during design so the decision is made with the full cost visible.

How long will my coach be at the shop for a remodel?

A partial refresh covering flooring, upholstery and cabinet faces typically runs two to four weeks. A full interior rebuild runs eight to sixteen weeks, driven mainly by cabinetry fabrication, countertop templating and appliance lead times. Special order components carry a deposit at order under our posted parts policy, since RV-specific parts are frequently built rather than stocked.

Do you work from my design or do you design it?

Either. Owners arrive with anything from a folder of saved images to complete drawings, and we work from what you have. What we add is the constraint layer: framing locations, slide clearances, door swings, appliance dimensions, electrical capacity and the weight schedule. Most designs need adjusting against those, and it is far cheaper to adjust on paper than in a bay.

Is it worth remodeling an older coach?

It depends on the shell rather than the interior. A twenty year old coach with a dry subfloor, a sound roof and good structure is an excellent candidate, because the expensive parts are healthy and the interior is the cheap part to change. A unit with soft floors and delaminated walls needs restoration first, and that assessment is the first thing we do rather than the last.
