Foam Density Is Why Your Dinette Went Flat
Owners describe cushions as having gone flat, and the cause is almost always the foam that was specified rather than the fabric on top of it. Factory RV cushions frequently use a low density polyurethane foam around 1.5 pounds per cubic foot, which feels acceptable on the showroom floor and takes a permanent compression set within a couple of seasons of real use.
Density and firmness are two different specifications, and confusing them is the most common mistake in a cushion order. Density describes how much material is in the foam and predicts how long it will last. Indentation force describes how firm it feels. A high density foam can be soft, and a low density foam can be firm and still collapse in a year. Our shop specifies both.
High resilience foam at 2.5 pounds per cubic foot or better is the sensible target for seating that gets daily use, and full-time owners are usually better served going higher still. For a dinette that also serves as a bed, layering a firmer base with a softer top layer solves the conflict between sitting support and sleeping comfort without needing two separate cushions.

Materials That Survive a Vehicle Interior
Marine-grade vinyl is the workhorse and for good reason. It cleans easily, tolerates UV far better than interior-grade vinyl, resists mildew and takes the abuse that a coach interior delivers. Its drawback is that it does not breathe, so it feels hot against skin on a summer afternoon and cold in the morning, which is the trade owners either accept or design around.
Coated performance fabrics and polyurethane leather alternatives bridge the gap. They look and feel closer to upholstery leather, they clean nearly as well as vinyl, and the better products carry serious abrasion ratings. Woven performance fabrics breathe, which makes them far more comfortable, but they demand more attention where children, pets and food are involved. Plenty of coaches end up with vinyl in the galley and woven fabric in the lounge for exactly that reason.
Abrasion rating is the number to ask about. Wyzenbeek double rub counts describe how much wear a fabric survives in testing, and heavy-duty residential upholstery typically starts around fifteen thousand while contract-grade goods run far higher. In a coach that is used weekly, specifying a contract-grade material rather than a decorative one is the difference between five years and fifteen.
Flammability Standards and Why They Apply Here
Vehicle interiors are subject to a horizontal burn rate standard for occupant compartment materials, and RV manufacturers build to it. When upholstery is replaced, the replacement material should meet the same standard rather than being selected purely on appearance, and reputable suppliers publish compliance data on their material specification sheets. Asking for that sheet takes a moment and it is the only reliable way to know what you are buying.
California adds its own furniture flammability requirements, and the current smoulder-resistance standard changed how filling materials are treated compared to the older open-flame test it replaced. The practical effect for an owner is that compliant materials are readily available and there is no good reason to install something that is not. Compliant goods are not meaningfully more expensive and the selection is not meaningfully narrower.
The reason this matters more in an RV than in a living room is proximity and egress. A coach interior is a small volume with limited exits, and it contains an LP system, a cooktop and a furnace. Specifying materials rated for the environment is not paperwork, and we treat it as part of the specification rather than as a box to check.
Headliners, Wall Panels and Adhesive Failure
A sagging headliner is an adhesive failure, not a fabric failure. The foam backing bonded to the headliner material breaks down under years of heat cycling, turns to powder and releases, and once it starts the sag spreads across the whole panel. Re-gluing the loose section is a repair that lasts weeks, because the backing everywhere else is in the same condition.
Doing it properly means removing the panel, stripping every trace of the degraded foam backing from the substrate, and bonding new material with a high-temperature contact adhesive. The stripping step is what people skip and it is the step that determines whether the repair holds. New fabric bonded over old crumbling foam releases on the first hot week. That is why the stripping stage takes longer than the bonding stage does.
Padded wall panels follow the same pattern, and in RVs they frequently double as the finish surface over the wall structure. That means removal can expose the framing and the insulation, which is a useful opportunity: any wall panel job is a chance to meter the wall behind it and catch moisture that would otherwise stay hidden until it reached the floor.

Seating Mechanisms, Frames and Jackknife Sofas
Theatre seating and recliners bring mechanisms into the job. Power recliners have motors, actuators and control boards; manual ones have spring-loaded linkages under real tension. A seat that will not return, sticks partway or has begun to lean is usually a mechanism or a frame problem, and recovering it without addressing that produces a beautiful chair that still does not work.
Jackknife sofas fail in a specific, predictable way. The hinge points and the support legs take the whole load of the conversion cycle, and after enough cycles the mounting hardware works loose in a lightweight frame. Left alone, the frame racks, the sofa sits crooked, and eventually a fastener tears through. Reinforcing the frame during a recover is inexpensive and it doubles the life of the piece.
Captain's chairs on motorhomes add a pedestal, a swivel and often a slider. Those get inspected as part of any seat work, because a swivel that binds gets forced, and a forced swivel damages the pedestal mount that ties into the floor structure. The seat is easy to recover; the mount underneath it is the part worth checking. A pedestal that has worked loose in the floor is a structural repair rather than a seating repair.

Sun, Salt and Keeping New Upholstery Looking New
UV through RV windows is brutal on interior materials, and it works fastest on whatever faces the biggest window. Owners who leave day-night shades open while a coach sits in storage return to a dinette with one faded cushion and three good ones. Closing the shades on a stored unit costs nothing and is the highest-return habit available for interior materials.
Cleaning chemistry matters more than frequency. Solvent-based cleaners strip plasticizer out of vinyl and make it brittle, and aggressive products break down the coating on performance fabrics. Mild soap, water and a soft brush handles nearly everything, and the manufacturer's cleaning code on the material specification sheet is worth following rather than guessing at. Most premature vinyl failure we see is chemical rather than mechanical.
Salt and humidity from coastal air reach interiors more than owners expect, particularly in a coach that gets aired out at the beach and then closed up. Ventilating a stored unit periodically, or running a small dehumidifier where power is available, prevents the mildew that shows up as spotting on cushion undersides long before it appears on the visible face.

Can a sagging headliner be glued back up?
Not durably. The sag is caused by the foam backing on the headliner material breaking down into powder, and that breakdown is uniform across the panel even where it has not released yet. Gluing the loose section holds for weeks. The lasting repair removes the panel, strips all the degraded backing from the substrate and bonds new material with high-temperature adhesive.
Do you have to meet any standards when replacing RV upholstery?
Vehicle occupant compartment materials are subject to a horizontal burn rate standard, and California adds its own furniture flammability requirement. Compliant materials are widely available and their specification sheets state it plainly, so there is no reason to install something unrated. In a small volume containing an LP system and a cooktop, this is worth being deliberate about.
Can you match my existing upholstery if only one piece is damaged?
Sometimes, and the honest limit is that the existing pieces have been fading in sunlight for years. A new panel in the original colour will read as new next to them. Where a seating group is visually a single unit, recovering the whole group produces a result owners are happy with; matching one piece into a faded set rarely does.
My theatre seat will not recline anymore. Is that an upholstery job?
It starts as a mechanism job. Power seats have motors, actuators and control boards, and manual ones have linkages under real spring tension, and a seat that sticks or leans usually has a mechanical or electrical failure rather than a fabric one.
