How these are built
Three donor platforms carry nearly the entire Class B market, and they behave differently in a body shop. The Mercedes Sprinter offers the highest roof, the stiffest shell and the most involved factory repair procedures, with structural adhesive used alongside welds in several joints. The Ford Transit is the volume choice, mixes steel and aluminum panels depending on configuration, and has the best parts availability of the three. The Ram ProMaster is front wheel drive with a low, flat floor and a wide body, which makes it the easiest to convert and the most awkward to repair, because its wide, tall side panels have very little stamped shape to hold a repair straight.
What separates a Class B from every other motorhome is that the body and the house are the same object. There is no laminate skin to open, no cap to unbolt and no cavity to reach into. Getting behind a damaged panel means removing cabinetry, wiring looms, water lines and insulation that a converter installed with adhesive and structural fasteners. On a fully finished van, teardown to expose a rear quarter can take longer than the metal work itself, and the estimate reflects that reality rather than a published automotive labour time.
High tops and pop tops introduce a bond line that the vehicle manufacturer never designed. Cutting the factory roof removes a stressed panel from the top of the shell, and the fiberglass cap that replaces it restores stiffness only if it is bonded correctly along the full perimeter with a structural adhesive rather than a sealant. Where that bond line ages or was done poorly, the symptom is a creak over uneven pavement, then a leak at the front corners, then visible movement between the cap and the body when the van is jacked at one corner.
Electrical systems on this class are dense and increasingly high energy. A modern Class B carries a lithium bank, an inverter charger, a DC to DC converter tied to the alternator, roof solar, a shore inlet and sometimes an underhood second alternator. All of it lives within a few feet of the body panels that get repaired. Before any welding, the battery system gets isolated properly, because a lithium bank does not tolerate stray welding current and the battery management system is more expensive than the panel being repaired.
Ownership realities are worth stating plainly. Class B vans hold value better than almost anything else in the RV market, they fit in a standard parking space, and San Juan Capistrano owners drive them daily rather than seasonally. That daily use means damage is usually small, frequent and cosmetic: parking lot dents, door dings, mirror strikes, rock chips. Where the two differ is documentation: a collision job answers to a carrier and to factory repair procedures, while a build answers to the owner and to the electrical and gas standards that apply to the systems installed.

What actually goes wrong on a class b camper van
Every class carries its own weak points. These are the ones that come through the gate most often.
Unibody repair rules apply, and they are not negotiable
A Class B is a car-derived structure, not a body on a frame. When the shell takes a hit, the correct repair follows the vehicle manufacturer procedure: measure to factory specification on a bench, section only at approved locations, use the specified weld type and joint, and restore corrosion protection to the inside of the closed section. Skipping the measurement step on a van with several hundred pounds of cabinetry bonded to the walls is how a vehicle comes back with a door that will not seal and tyre wear nobody can explain.
Every hole in the roof was drilled by somebody other than the factory
Vans arrive with a solid roof. Fans, air conditioners, solar arrays, antennas and mounting rails are all aftermarket cuts, and their long-term watertightness depends entirely on the installer who made them. We routinely find butyl tape used where a sealant with real elongation was needed, self-tapping screws through a single skin with no backing, and sealant applied over a dirty surface. Roof leaks on a Class B are almost never a material failure. They are an installation failure that took two years to show.
Weight arrives before the owner notices
A Sprinter 3500 or Transit 350 based camper leaves the converter within a few hundred pounds of its rating. Add a lithium bank, a full fresh water tank, a bike rack, a rear box and two people with gear and it is over. Overloading shows up first as squat and poor headlight aim, then as rear spring fatigue, then as cracking at the rear body mounts. When a van comes in for a sagging rear or a persistent alignment complaint, weighing it corner by corner is a faster diagnosis than any amount of suspension inspection.
Driver assistance systems complicate ordinary body work
Modern van platforms carry radar behind the grille, cameras at the windshield and mirrors, and ultrasonic sensors in the bumper covers. A bumper replacement, a windshield swap or even a change in ride height from suspension work can put those systems out of calibration. Recalibration is a documented procedure with target boards, level floor requirements and a scan report at the end. It is not optional and it happens after the body work is finished, not before.
Dissimilar metal corrosion is a converter-created problem
Ford Transit rear body panels and doors use aluminum in several configurations. When a converter drives a stainless steel screw into aluminum without an isolator, galvanic corrosion starts at the contact point and works outward under the paint. It looks like a paint bubble. It is metal loss. The repair means removing the fastener, cutting back to sound material, treating the area with the correct etch and primer sequence, and reinstalling with an isolating washer so the same reaction does not restart.
