Gelcoat, Clear Coat and Knowing Which You Have

Most RV exteriors are one of two things and they behave very differently under a polisher. Gelcoat is a thick pigmented polyester surface, common on fiberglass sidewalls and caps, and it oxidizes into a chalky layer that transfers to your hand when you touch it. Automotive clear coat over base is what you find on painted coaches and on the front caps of many units, and it is a thin film with a finite amount of material available.

The distinction decides how aggressive we can be. Gelcoat is thick and forgiving, so heavy oxidation can be cut back with a wool pad and a compound and there is plenty of material behind it. Clear coat is measured in thousandths of an inch and a rotary polisher in the wrong hands will go through it on an edge in seconds, which turns a detail into a refinish. We take film thickness readings on painted surfaces before choosing a process.

The same coach frequently has both. A painted fiberglass front cap, gelcoat sidewalls and an aluminium-sided rear is a completely normal combination, and each area needs its own approach and its own products. Treating the whole vehicle with one pad and one compound is how a detail leaves holograms on one panel and does nothing on another.

Multi-Stage Correction and What Polishing Actually Does

Correction is controlled abrasion. A compound with a cutting pad removes a thin layer of the surface along with the oxidation, wash marks and light scratches sitting in it, then progressively finer polish and softer pads refine the finish until it reflects cleanly. Skipping the refining stages leaves a surface that looks good in shade and shows a haze of fine marks in direct sun, which is the signature of a rushed job.

Wet sanding sits above compounding in aggression and it has a legitimate place on severely oxidized gelcoat, on deep isolated scratches and on runs in a fresh refinish. It is done with progressively finer papers on a hard block or an interface pad, and each grit has to fully remove the scratch pattern of the one before it or the result is visible forever. It is not something to attempt on clear coat without measuring the film first.

Lighting determines quality more than technique. Defects that are invisible under fluorescent shop light appear immediately under a focused inspection light held at the right angle, and a detailer who cannot see the marks cannot remove them. We work indoors under lighting chosen to reveal defects rather than to flatter the panel, which is also why a coach detailed outdoors in the sun so often disappoints once it is parked in a garage.

Black Streaks, Hard Water and Coastal Contamination

Black streaks running down from every roof edge, awning rail and window are the RV owner's signature complaint. They come from oxidized roof membrane and from the dirt it collects, dissolved and carried down the sidewall by every rain. On gelcoat that has lost its gloss, that residue penetrates the porous oxidized layer and simply washing it does nothing. Correction removes the layer holding the staining, and protection prevents it re-embedding.

Hard water spotting is a different chemistry. Orange County water leaves mineral deposits when it evaporates on a hot panel, and given time and sun those deposits etch into the surface rather than sitting on it. Early spotting comes off with an acidic remover. Etched spotting has to be polished out, which is why a coach washed in full sun and left to dry is quietly damaging itself every time.

Coastal vehicles also collect iron and salt fallout that bonds to the surface. A dedicated decontamination step, chemical iron removal followed by a clay treatment, removes what washing cannot and has to happen before any polishing, since dragging embedded particles across a panel under a pad puts scratches in faster than the polish takes them out.

Sealant, Ceramic Coating and What Protection Buys You

Protection is applied after correction because it locks in whatever is underneath. Coating over uncorrected, oxidized paint seals the defects in place for years, which is the opposite of the intended outcome. Correct first, protect second, in that order, every time.

A polymer sealant is straightforward, applies quickly and gives good gloss and water beading for a season or two. A ceramic coating forms a harder, more chemically resistant layer that stays on the vehicle for years and makes cleaning meaningfully easier, which on a surface as large as an RV sidewall translates into real time saved. It also resists the black streak staining substantially better than bare gelcoat.

Coatings need a controlled cure and that is another reason this work happens indoors. Temperature, humidity and dwell time before levelling all affect the result, and a coating that flashes too quickly leaves high spots that have to be polished off and reapplied. The vehicle stays inside for the cure window rather than being handed back the same afternoon.

Roof Membrane, Awnings and Aluminium Brightwork

Roof cleaning is where well-intentioned owners do damage. EPDM rubber roofs chalk by design, releasing a surface layer that carries dirt away with it, and cleaning them with a petroleum-based product or a harsh solvent degrades the membrane and shortens its life significantly. A mild detergent and a soft brush is the whole procedure. TPO and fiberglass roofs tolerate more, but a pressure washer near any sealant bead is a bad idea on every roof type.

Awning fabric cleaning is worth doing properly because replacement fabric is expensive. Vinyl and acrylic fabrics need different treatments, and the mildew that grows in the rolled fabric during a damp winter has to be killed rather than just wiped, or it returns within weeks. Fabric is cleaned extended, rinsed thoroughly and dried completely before it is rolled, which is the step almost everyone skips.

Polished aluminium brightwork, common on the sides of older coaches and on wheels, restores beautifully but needs a staged approach with progressively finer compounds and dedicated pads. Anodized aluminium is a different material entirely and acid brighteners will permanently ruin the anodized layer. Identifying which one you are looking at before reaching for a chemical is not optional.

Interiors, Odour and Preparing a Coach for Sale

Interior reconditioning starts with extraction rather than surface cleaning. Upholstery and carpet in a coach that has been lived in hold far more than they appear to, and hot water extraction pulls it out rather than pushing it around. Hard surfaces, cabinetry, window tracks and vent grilles follow, and the difference between a good interior detail and an average one is entirely in the places nobody photographs.

Odour is treated at the source before anything else. An odour that persists after a full clean has a physical cause: a slow plumbing leak feeding mould in a cabinet base, a rodent in a wall cavity, or a holding tank that has never been properly serviced. Ozone and enzyme treatments handle residual odour once the source is dealt with, and they accomplish nothing at all while the source is still there.

Reconditioning before a sale is straightforwardly good economics. A coach with corrected paint, protected surfaces, clean upholstery and restored trim photographs better, shows better and holds its asking price in a way that a discount cannot replicate. It also removes the easiest negotiating lever a buyer has, which is a list of cosmetic complaints on a walkaround.

Process

How the work runs

  1. 01

    Assessment and film measurement

    We identify gelcoat versus clear coat on each area of the vehicle and take film thickness readings on painted surfaces. That determines how aggressive the correction can safely be and where a lighter approach is mandatory.

  2. 02

    Wash and decontamination

    A controlled wash indoors, followed by chemical iron removal and a clay treatment to lift embedded fallout. Polishing over embedded contamination puts scratches in faster than the polish removes them, so this step is never skipped.

  3. 03

    Test section

    A small area is corrected first with the intended pad and product combination, then inspected under focused light. That result sets the process for the whole vehicle and shows you what the finish will look like before the full job is committed.

  4. 04

    Staged correction

    Compound with a cutting pad where oxidation demands it, then progressively finer polish and softer pads to refine. Edges, raised body lines and decal borders are handled by hand or with reduced speed where a machine would burn through.

  5. 05

    Protection and cure

    Surfaces are wiped down to remove polishing oils that would otherwise prevent bonding, then sealant or ceramic coating applied and levelled within its working window. The vehicle stays indoors for the documented cure period.

    Interior, trim and final inspection

    Extraction, hard surface cleaning, trim dressing, lens restoration and odour treatment where required, followed by a full walkaround under inspection lighting with you present rather than a phone call saying it is ready.

Can chalky, oxidized gelcoat actually be brought back?

In most cases yes, and the results surprise owners. Gelcoat is a thick material, so heavy oxidation can be cut back with a compound and a wool pad with plenty of material remaining underneath. The limit is gelcoat that has weathered through to the fiberglass mat, which shows as a rough fibrous texture rather than chalk. At that point the surface needs refinishing rather than polishing.

Is a ceramic coating worth it on a vehicle this large?

For most owners it is, precisely because of the size. The coating makes cleaning meaningfully faster on a surface area where washing is a genuine chore, and it resists the black streak staining that plagues RV sidewalls. It lasts years rather than a season. The requirement is that the paint is corrected first, because a coating locks in whatever is underneath it.

How do I clean my rubber roof without damaging it?

Mild detergent, a soft brush and plenty of rinsing. EPDM membranes chalk by design as part of how they shed dirt, and petroleum-based cleaners or harsh solvents break the material down and shorten its life. Avoid pressure washing anywhere near a sealant bead on any roof type, because lifting the edge of a bead creates a leak path that will not be visible from the ground.

Why do my black streaks come back so quickly?

Because the surface holding them has not been addressed. Oxidized gelcoat is porous, so the roof runoff embeds into it rather than sitting on top, and washing removes only what is on the surface. Correcting the oxidation and then protecting the panel with a sealant or coating is what breaks the cycle. Without that, the streaks return with the next rain every time.

Can you get an odour out of the interior?

Once the source is dealt with, yes. An odour that survives a thorough cleaning always has a physical cause: mould in a cabinet base fed by a slow leak, a rodent in a wall cavity, or a holding tank that has never been properly serviced. We find and fix the source first, then use extraction and ozone or enzyme treatment for the residual. Treating the smell alone accomplishes nothing.

Should I recondition before selling my coach?

It is one of the most reliable returns available on a used RV. Corrected paint, clean upholstery and restored trim change how the vehicle photographs and how it shows, and they remove the walkaround list that a buyer would otherwise use to negotiate. It is generally cheaper than the discount you would concede on cosmetic condition, and it makes the unit sell faster.
