How is a specialty RV shop different from a dealer service department?

Dealer service lanes are organized around selling units. The bays are sized for pre-delivery inspection and light repair, the technicians are trained on the brands the dealer carries, and the scheduling priority goes to units that are about to be sold or that are still inside the manufacturer coverage window. That model works well for a slide adjustment on a two year old fifth wheel bought on the same lot. It works poorly for a ten year old coach with structural damage and no factory relationship.

The physical constraint is the bigger issue. Structural repair on a coach needs a bay that can take a forty five foot vehicle with room to open both sides, plus lifting capacity, plus a paint booth that can refinish a full sidewall in a single pass rather than in sections. Very few dealerships own that. What they own is a wash bay and a downdraft booth sized for a pickup, which is why dealer collision work on RVs so often gets sublet to somebody else and marked up on the way through.

There is also a parts posture difference. A dealer orders through the manufacturer channel and waits. A specialty shop sources from the manufacturer when the part is proprietary, from the original component supplier when it is not, and fabricates when the part is discontinued. On a coach built in 2011 with a moulded cap that has been out of production since 2016, fabrication is frequently the only path that does not end in a total loss determination.

None of this makes dealers useless. If your unit is new, the fault is a component defect, and the manufacturer is going to cover the parts, the dealer is the right stop. Why a general auto body shop is the wrong place for a coach

An automotive body shop is very good at what it does, and almost none of it transfers. A car body is stamped steel or aluminum, spot welded into a unibody, with crush zones engineered to fold in a known sequence. The repair methods follow from that: sectioning at manufacturer-specified cut lines, squeeze type resistance spot welding, panel bonding adhesives rated for the substrate, and pull sequences on a bench that references factory dimensional data.

A coach sidewall is a bonded sandwich. Fiberglass or aluminum skin on the outside, luan or composite backer, block foam or fiberglass batt insulation, aluminum or laminated wood framing, and an interior wall panel, all pressed together with adhesive in a heated laminating press at the factory. There is no bench, no factory dimensional data in the collision sense, and no crush zone. When that panel is hit, the failure mode is delamination and adhesive separation spreading outward from the impact, sometimes two feet past anything visible.

Refinish is the second gap. Cars are painted in panels bounded by seams and body lines that give the painter natural break points for blending. A coach sidewall can be thirty eight feet of continuous surface with a full-body graphic scheme over it, no seams, and a gelcoat or clear coat that has been sitting in Southern California sun for a decade. Getting a repair to disappear on that surface is a different problem, solved with spectrophotometer readings, sprayout cards and long blend zones rather than a quick panel match.

The practical tell is size. If the shop cannot get your unit inside, they will work on it outside, and exterior structural adhesive work done in a parking lot at ambient humidity is work you will be paying somebody else to redo. OCRV Center brings the coach indoors and keeps it there.

How do I tell whether my problem is body, structure or systems?

Ask what changed and when. Sudden change after a specific event is almost always body or structure: a collision, a low clearance strike, a wind event that caught an awning or a slide topper, a tree limb on the roof. Gradual change with no event behind it points at systems or at sealant. A refrigerator that cools less each summer, a converter that stopped charging, a slide that has become progressively slower over two seasons, and a soft spot in the floor that grew are all in that second family.

Then ask whether the symptom moves. Water intrusion is the classic case. A stain that appears only after rain, and only on the driver side, is a shell problem: a window flange, a marker light gasket, a clearance lamp base or a seam. A stain that appears regardless of weather, especially near the wet bath or under the fridge, is plumbing or a condensate drain, which is a systems problem. Same symptom, entirely different department, and the wrong guess costs you a full teardown.

Electrical faults have their own signature. Something dead only on shore power and fine on battery is a converter, transfer switch or shore cord problem. Something dead only on generator is a generator output or transfer switch problem. Something dead on all three sources is a distribution panel, breaker or ground problem. What happens when you bring a coach into the shop

Intake starts with photographs. Every panel, every corner, the roof, the interior and the odometer, before anybody touches anything. That set becomes the baseline for the whole job and it is what settles any later question about pre-existing condition. Then a written damage report gets built, either as a collision estimate or as a systems evaluation, depending on which department the vehicle belongs to.

Collision estimates at OCRV Center are complimentary, and insurance walk-ins do not need an appointment. Systems work is different, because nobody can quote a slide fault or an intermittent electrical problem from the parking lot. That evaluation is $150 and comes off the invoice when the repair is authorized. Instrumented diagnostic time on a genuinely difficult fault, such as a parasitic draw or a control module that only misbehaves warm, bills at $285 per hour with a one hour minimum, credited the same way.

Teardown follows authorization, and teardown is where the estimate usually changes. On a coach you cannot see behind a sidewall until the skin comes off, and what is behind it is frequently worse than the outside suggested. Rotten framing, corroded fasteners, crushed insulation and separated adhesive show up at that point. Those findings get photographed and submitted as a supplement rather than absorbed quietly, which is the only honest way to run the process.

Repair, refinish, reassembly and quality control follow in sequence. Paint is spectrophotometer matched, sprayed in a downdraft booth and checked against the adjacent panel in daylight before anything goes back on. The vehicle gets a documented multi-point check before release, and the final balance is due at pickup.

What RV repair costs and what actually drives the number

Labor rates are posted rather than negotiated. Body and paint work bills at $210 per hour. Mechanical and electrical work, which covers 12V and 120V systems, generators, plumbing, appliances, leveling and suspension, bills at $260 per hour. Diagnostics, scan and programming bills at $285 per hour with a one hour minimum. Detail work bills at $95 per hour. Publishing those numbers is unusual in this trade and it is deliberate, because the alternative is an owner who cannot compare two estimates in any meaningful way.

Materials scale with the job rather than sitting as a flat line. Paint supplies run $55 per hour times the paint hours, covering primer, sealer, base, clear, reducer, activator, masking and booth consumables. Body supplies run $5 per hour times the body hours. A $45 hazmat charge applies where chemicals, refrigerant or LP are handled. Parts carry 100 percent markup at or below $100 and 35 percent above it, which reflects the fact that receiving a $12 clip costs the same in handling as receiving a $1,200 panel.

The variables that move a coach estimate most are size, access and originality. A repair two feet from an open edge is straightforward. The same repair in the middle of a laminated wall behind a wet bath means removing the interior to reach it. An original moulded cap costs what the manufacturer charges; a discontinued one costs what it takes to build a mould and lay it up. That is why the same described damage can quote at $4,000 on one coach and $28,000 on another.

Deposits are structured. Jobs over $2,000 take 50 percent at authorization, jobs over $10,000 take an additional 25 percent when parts arrive, and special order parts require a 100 percent non-refundable deposit because RV panels and caps are built to order and cannot be returned once released.

When does repairing a coach stop making sense?

There is a point where the honest answer is that the repair is not worth doing, and a shop that will not say so is not doing you a favor. The threshold is rarely a single number. It is the relationship between the repair cost, the market value of the specific unit, the availability of the parts it needs, and how much life is left in the systems that are not damaged.

The three findings that most often push a coach past the line are widespread subfloor rot, frame rail corrosion on a towable, and delamination that has spread across more than one wall. Each of them means the damage is no longer local. Subfloor rot travels along the joists, frame corrosion undermines every mounting point above it, and multi-wall delamination usually indicates the laminate bond has failed from age rather than from impact, in which case fixing one panel just moves the problem sideways.

Age changes the math in the other direction too. A high-line diesel coach with a solid chassis and 60,000 miles is worth substantial structural investment because the expensive parts of it are fine. A fifteen year old towable with a soft floor, a chalked roof and three failed appliances is a different conversation, and pouring $18,000 into it usually produces a unit worth less than the invoice.

Driving up from San Juan Capistrano

The facility is in Yorba Linda, not in San Juan Capistrano, and that distinction matters because it sets expectations correctly. The route is roughly 26 miles and about 35 minutes without traffic: Interstate 5 north to the 91 east, or the 241 toll road north to Yorba Linda Boulevard if you would rather avoid the interchange with a long vehicle. Both work for a forty foot coach. The 241 is the calmer drive on a weekday morning.

Coastal Orange County storage is hard on coaches in ways inland storage is not. Marine layer humidity sits on a roof every morning, salt-bearing air accelerates corrosion on aluminum trim, fasteners and awning hardware, and the UV load through the middle of the day breaks down sealant and gelcoat faster than owners expect. Units kept within a few miles of the coast tend to arrive with more sealant fatigue and more oxidation at the same age than inland units do.

Plan the drop rather than improvising it. Bring the registration and the insurance information, clear personal belongings out of the areas that will be worked on, and leave the keys to every compartment. Is RV repair the same trade as auto body repair?

No. Car bodies are stamped steel or aluminum joined by spot welds, with engineered crush zones. Coach bodies are bonded laminate panels with no crush structure, and they fail by delaminating rather than folding. The tooling, adhesives, repair sequences and refinish methods are different, and so are the bay and booth sizes required to do the work indoors.

How long does a typical RV repair take?
