Food truck service side rebuilt and rewired after a parking lot strike

The damage

A reversing vehicle struck the serving side of the truck just aft of the service window, folding the lower panel inward across a five foot span and tearing the service window frame out of its lower mounting. The prep counter behind the panel had been pushed off its supports, the fresh water line to the hand sink was crushed against the wall, and three circuits running in the affected wall cavity were pinched hard enough to expose conductor. The truck could not pass its operating inspection in that condition.

What happened

A food truck is a commercial kitchen bolted to a chassis, and repairing one means satisfying two sets of standards at the same time. The body has to be structurally correct and the interior has to be cleanable to a finish an inspector will accept. OCRV Center writes these jobs with both in mind from the first estimate, because a body repair that leaves an unsealed seam behind a prep counter is a truck that cannot open, regardless of how good the panel looks from outside.

The strike had folded the lower panel inward across five feet and torn the service window frame out of its lower mounting. That much was visible. Behind the panel the prep counter had come off its supports, the fresh water line to the hand sink was crushed flat against the wall, and three circuits in the cavity were pinched hard enough to expose conductor. The truck was isolated electrically on arrival before anyone worked near it, which is standard practice on any unit with 120 volt distribution.

Liability sat with a third party carrier that had not accepted the claim, and the owner could not wait for the investigation. A parked food truck earns nothing, and the weekend markets that carry most of the season do not hold a space open. OCRV Center wrote the repair as a customer-pay job against the published fabrication band so the owner could see the hour range before committing, with the photograph file assembled to the same standard a carrier would require in case recovery came later.

Fabrication ran the critical path. Neither the lower panel profile nor the service window frame exists as a purchasable part on a nine year old step van conversion, so both were fabricated to the original profile, fitted dry and checked square before anything was welded. Getting the window opening square first matters, because a frame that is a few millimetres out will let the window drop and bind for the rest of the truck's life, and the operator finds out on a busy service.

Plumbing and electrical went in while the wall was open, which is the only sensible time to do it. The fresh water line was renewed from the pump manifold rather than spliced at the crush point, and pressure tested before the wall closed. The three damaged circuits were replaced end to end instead of joined mid-run, then relabelled at the panel so the next person to open that wall has a chance of understanding it. Splices in a wall cavity on a vibrating vehicle are a fault waiting for a service rush.

The interior surface was restored to a cleanable finish with every seam sealed, and the prep counter reset level on rebuilt supports. Outside, the serving side was refinished and the livery reprinted to match the surviving graphics on the opposite side, because a food truck with mismatched branding on one flank reads as damaged even when it is not. The owner ran a function check on water, power and the window with a service writer before collection on day seventeen.
