How these are built
Service bodies come in a handful of families and the differences matter when something is damaged. An open utility body has compartments down both sides with an open cargo bed between them. The understructure is what nobody sees and what everything depends on. What actually goes wrong on a utility truck
Every class carries its own weak points. These are the ones that come through the gate most often.
Compartment doors are the hardest working parts on the truck
A crew opens and shuts every door on a service body multiple times per job, often with a gloved hand and a hip, often while the truck is parked on a slope. Continuous hinges wear, latch rotors go out of adjustment, gas struts lose pressure and door skins dent from the inside as tools shift. Once a door hangs low it drags on the striker and wears faster. Repair means addressing the hinge and the aperture, not adjusting the latch to accommodate a door that no longer hangs square.
Crane and equipment mounting loads go straight into the body floor
A service crane applies a moment into its pedestal that the body floor was never sized to carry alone, which is why manufacturers specify a reinforcement package tying the pedestal into the subframe and the chassis rails. Where a crane was added later without that package, cracking appears around the pedestal and the body begins to deflect when the crane is loaded. Correcting it is fabrication: proper reinforcement, load spread into the frame, and repair of the deformed floor structure.
Compartment floors are corrosion traps by design
Compartments collect water from washing, from rain when a door is left open, and from wet tools stowed at the end of a shift. Drains block with debris and the water sits on the compartment floor against the panel seams. Steel bodies rust from the inside out and the first sign is often a stain on the outside of the body below a compartment. Repair means cutting out affected material, restoring the drainage, and coating the inside surfaces rather than only the visible outside.
The body walks on the frame if the mounts are neglected
Service bodies attach to the chassis through mounting brackets and U-bolts that were torqued at the upfitter and rarely checked again. Torsional flex and heavy loading back them off gradually. A body that has shifted shows a changing gap at the cab, a rear that no longer sits level, and eventually elongated mounting holes and worn frame rails. Checking body mount torque is a five minute task that prevents a fabrication job, and almost nobody has it on a schedule.
Aluminum and steel bodies suit different work and repair differently
Steel bodies are cheaper, tougher against impact and simple to weld, and they rust wherever the coating is broken. Aluminum bodies cut several hundred pounds of weight, which goes straight into payload, and they resist corrosion until a steel fastener or bracket introduces a galvanic couple. In repair terms they are separate disciplines with separate tooling and separate work areas. Bodies that have been repaired with the wrong process show it within a year, usually as bubbling paint around a bracket.
