Box truck returned to route after a loading dock corner strike

The damage

The truck backed into the corner of a loading dock at low speed, driving the rear corner post of the box forward roughly four inches. The right rear panel buckled from the roll-up door track to the floor line, the door track itself twisted enough that the door bound at the last two feet of travel, and the rear sill was pushed up out of plane. Underneath, the rearmost body mounting bracket had sheared one of its two fasteners and the body had shifted on the chassis rail.

What happened

Fleet work is judged on one number, which is how many days the unit is off the road. This customer runs six box trucks out of an inland yard and each one covers a fixed route, so a truck in a shop is a route being covered by overtime somewhere else. OCRV Center scheduled the repair around that reality, and the fleet manager was told at intake which days the truck would be sitting waiting on approval rather than being worked on.

The damage looked like a panel job and was not. A dock corner strike at walking pace transfers a great deal of load into the rear corner post, and on this truck the post had driven forward far enough to twist the roll-up door track and push the rear sill out of plane. More importantly the box had shifted on the chassis rail, shearing one of two fasteners at the rearmost body mounting bracket. None of that appears in a photograph of a buckled panel.

Alignment was measured before anything was cut. That measurement is what turned an argument into an approval: the supplement went to the carrier with the box position relative to the chassis rails documented in numbers and photographs, and it came back approved without a re-inspection. Re-inspections on commercial units routinely cost three to five days, and on a six truck fleet that is the difference between covering a route with overtime for a week and covering it for two.

The corner post was fabricated rather than ordered. Dry freight box components on a five year old chassis are not sitting in a warehouse, and waiting on one would have added weeks. OCRV Center cut the damaged post out, fabricated a replacement to the original section, welded it in and coated it before the new panel section went on. Fabrication capability is the reason commercial work does not stall at the parts counter the way it does at a dealership.

Roll-up doors are unforgiving of approximation. The track was pulled and straightened on a fixture rather than levered back by hand, then checked through full travel with new rollers fitted before the panel was closed up. A door that binds in the last two feet gets forced by drivers until something breaks properly, so the function check at OCRV Center runs the door repeatedly rather than once. The interior lining was restored to a surface that will not snag freight.

Livery closed the job out. The customer supplied a brand standard sheet, the graphics for the repaired panel were reprinted to it and applied with alignment checked against the surviving panels either side, because a fleet truck with graphics half an inch out reads worse than one with a dent. The fleet manager walked the quality control sheet and the truck went back to route on day eighteen, with the two remaining units in the fleet booked for cosmetic work on a schedule rather than an emergency.

Scope of work

  • Body alignment checked against the chassis rails before any panel work, with measurements photographed

Claim handling

Supplements: One. The initial estimate treated the damage as panel and door track only. The supplement covered the sheared body mounting bracket and the corner post replacement once alignment measurements showed the box had shifted on the chassis rail.

Outcome: Approved with the structural line items intact. The carrier accepted the alignment measurements and photographs without ordering a re-inspection, which kept the truck moving through the shop instead of parked waiting.
