Who we help
Fifth Wheel Owners
Fifth wheel owners around San Juan Capistrano tow large towables with an overhang bedroom, multiple slides and a pin box carrying substantial load. OCRV Center repairs front cap damage, frame and pin box structure, delamination, slides and roofs on those units in shop at the Yorba Linda facility.
The situation
Typically a truck owner who moved up from a travel trailer for the space, tows to Pismo, the river or the desert several times a year, and does their own sealant maintenance until something happens that they cannot fix in a driveway. The unit is heavy, long and built more lightly than its size suggests. Most arrive after a jackknife contact with the truck cab, a low clearance strike on the overhang, or delamination that has been spreading along the off door side for two seasons. They are practical people who want the structural answer rather than a cosmetic one.
Fifth wheels fail in a distinctive pattern, and once you have seen a few hundred it becomes predictable. The overhang is a cantilever carrying a bedroom, and it is built from aluminum tube framing, foam and a thin bonded skin. Anything that loads it, whether a tight turn that brings the cap into the truck cab, a low clearance strike, or years of flex on rough surfaces, concentrates at the joint where the overhang meets the main body. That joint is also where the roof membrane transitions, which is why structural problems and water problems arrive together. Owners usually describe two separate problems and they are almost always one problem.
Cap damage is therefore rarely just cap damage. A crack in a molded front cap that runs into a mounting flange or into the roof bond joint means the panel is no longer performing its structural role, and repairing the laminate without addressing the framing behind it produces a cosmetic result that moves again within a year. We remove interior finish to get access, correct the framing, then rebuild or replace the cap. It is more disassembly than owners expect and it is what makes the repair permanent. Interior finish comes out first, which is the step most quotes quietly leave out.
Delamination on these units gets dismissed faster than anything else in the catalog. Most of the time that dismissal is correct, because separation of the skin from the substrate is usually a slow moisture and adhesive failure. But an impact also breaks a bond line, and a wall struck at speed lifts along the load path weeks or months later, well away from the contact point. We map the void with tap testing and thermal imaging and compare the boundary against the documented strike, then photograph the adhesive failure surfaces at the cut. A mapped boundary gives everyone something concrete to discuss instead of a category.
Slide rooms on a large fifth wheel are heavy, often twelve feet or more, and carried on rack and pinion or in wall mechanisms that were specified with very little margin. A room that has racked even slightly will still travel while grinding its wiper seals and admitting water at the top corners. Timing adjustments hide that for a handful of cycles. We check squareness under power, correct the room structure where it has moved, replace the seal set, then recalibrate travel and cycle it repeatedly before the unit is released. Seals last when the box is square, and they do not last before that.
Frame and running gear are the parts owners worry about least and should worry about most. These units are heavy and the frames underneath are lighter than the mass sitting on them, so a hard impact or an overloaded pin can move geometry in ways that show up as uneven tire wear rather than as visible damage. We measure against specification, section and weld members where they have yielded, and inspect the pin box mounting. Everything is documented with dimensions before and after, not described. Uneven tire wear after a hard hit is a symptom worth reporting at intake.
The unit has to come to Yorba Linda, which for San Juan Capistrano owners is about twenty six miles north via the 241 or Interstate 5. There is room to maneuver a forty foot towable on the property, which is not true of most industrial parks closer to the coast. Bring the tow vehicle if the unit is being dropped, and call (949) 799-3387 ahead so a stall and an estimator are ready. The collision estimate terms are as posted: Complimentary. Insurance walk-ins welcome. Leave the tow vehicle if you can, since staging a towable alone is simpler.
What gets in the way
- The front cap contacted the truck cab during a tight turn and the damage runs into the overhang structure
- Delamination is bubbling along a sidewall and everyone has called it wear without looking
- Two slides bind, and adjusting them has not held for more than a few trips
- The pin box or frame has been loaded past its rating and nobody wants to assess it
- A roof seam at the front cap joint has been leaking into the bedroom floor
- Suspension and axle geometry changed after a hard hit and tire wear is now uneven
- The unit is too long and too tall for the shops nearest the coast
What the shop does
- Repair and replace front and rear caps, including the overhang structure behind them
- Section and reframe laminated sidewalls with the tube framing corrected first
- Map delamination boundaries by tap test and thermal imaging before scoping the repair
- Weld and section frame members and inspect pin box mounting to the specified geometry
- Square, reseal and recalibrate slide rooms rather than adjusting motor timing alone
- Replace roof membrane and rebuild the cap to roof joint where the seam has failed
- Correct suspension and axle alignment where a hit has moved the running gear
On the insurance side
- Towables are often scheduled under a separate policy or endorsement from the tow vehicle. Confirming which unit the claim number covers before an estimate is written prevents a full round of correspondence with the wrong desk.
- Delamination is regularly classified as wear, which is frequently correct and sometimes not. Where a documented impact preceded it, mapping the void boundary against the load path is what distinguishes the two.
- Frame and pin box work is measured against specification and photographed before and after. That record matters at resale as much as during the claim, because a repaired structure with no documentation is discounted harder.
- OCRV Center bills carriers directly on approved scope and is an independent facility with no network affiliation. Owners choose their repair shop in California.
