Repair or Let It Go: Judging Whether an RV Is Worth Fixing

Deciding whether to repair an RV means comparing the cost of returning it to sound condition against its value in that condition, adjusted for how long you intend to keep it. The decision fails when it is made on the visible damage alone, because the visible damage is rarely the whole scope on a laminated vehicle.

The four numbers the decision actually turns on

Every repair or replace decision reduces to four figures: what the vehicle is worth in sound condition, what it is worth as it stands, what full repair will cost, and how many more years you intend to keep it. Most owners can estimate the first two and skip the third and fourth, which is where the decision goes wrong.

Value in sound condition is the easier of the two valuations, though RV comparables are thin. Look for the same model year, the same floorplan and a similar chassis, and be honest about options. A coach with a specific configuration may have only a handful of genuine comparables, and a listing price is not a sale price.

Value as it stands is harder and more important. A coach with structural moisture is not worth its sound value minus the repair cost; it is worth considerably less, because most buyers will not take on an unknown. This asymmetry is why deferring a repair usually costs more than doing it, and why partial repairs rarely recover their cost at sale.

The fourth number, your intended holding period, is the one people forget to include and the one that most often decides the answer. Work that never repays itself at sale can still be entirely rational if you plan to use the vehicle for ten more years. The same work on a coach you plan to sell next spring is money handed over for nothing.

Why the visible damage is never the whole scope

RVs are built as laminated sandwiches with cabinetry, plumbing and wiring bonded inside walls and floors. That construction means damage propagates behind surfaces that look intact, and the honest scope of any structural repair is unknown until the vehicle is opened. This is not evasion; it is the nature of the structure.

The practical consequence is that a decision made against an initial estimate is a decision made against incomplete information. A prudent owner treats an opening figure on a structural job as a lower bound and adds a meaningful contingency before deciding. Where a coach is close to the line without a contingency, it is over the line with one.

Two categories of hidden scope dominate. Water, which travels far from its entry point and turns substrate to pulp along the way, and structural movement, which transmits force along framing and shows up at section changes remote from the impact. Both are found by measurement and mapping rather than by inspection, which is why those steps precede pricing.

The useful protective step is to pay for the mapping before committing to the repair. Moisture readings, sounding maps and structural measurement cost a fraction of a repair and convert an unknown into a scope. On a coach where the answer might be to stop, that assessment is the single best money an owner can spend, because it is what makes the decision informed.

The damage types that usually justify repair

Anything currently admitting water into the structure is worth fixing promptly, almost regardless of vehicle value, because the cost of the repair grows continuously while the leak continues. A failed seal repaired this season is a modest job. The same failure left for three seasons becomes floor, wall and cabinetry work.

Collision damage to a coach with a sound chassis, a dry structure and a reliable drivetrain generally justifies repair, particularly on larger diesel units where the underlying vehicle carries most of the value. Body and paint work on a structurally healthy coach is expensive but it is bounded, and the result is a vehicle with many years left.

Mechanical and systems failures usually justify repair because they are discrete. A failed air conditioner, a dead converter, a generator needing a control board, a slide motor: each of these has a defined scope and a defined cost, and none of them cascades into the rest of the vehicle the way water does. These are maintenance decisions rather than existential ones.

Safety related items are not really part of this calculation at all. Brakes, suspension, tyres, LP integrity, carbon monoxide detection and structural attachment points either work or the vehicle should not be used. Where a coach cannot economically be made safe, that is a strong signal about its overall future rather than a line item to defer.

The damage patterns that usually mean stopping

Multi system moisture is the clearest stop signal. When the roof deck, both sidewall bases and the floor perimeter all read wet, the vehicle needs its shell rebuilt. Each affected area has to be opened to reach the next, so the labour compounds rather than adds, and the total routinely exceeds the value of anything but a high end coach.

Extensive frame corrosion is the second. Steel that has lost section thickness across a length of rail cannot be straightened, because there is nothing sound to pull against, and section replacement addresses one area while the rest of the rail remains in the same condition. On a trailer with modest value this is nearly always the end.

The third pattern is accumulated deferral. A coach where the roof needs replacing, the slides need mechanisms, the floor is soft in two places and the generator is finished is not four repairs; it is a restoration. Owners often arrive with a list like this and ask which item to do first. The more useful question is whether the list as a whole makes sense.

Age alone is not a stop signal, which is worth saying clearly. Plenty of older coaches are structurally excellent because they were stored covered and maintained. Plenty of newer ones are compromised because they were parked outside with a failing seal. Condition decides this, not the year on the registration.

How insurance changes the arithmetic, and how it does not

Where a covered loss is involved, the calculation changes because part of the cost may not fall on the owner. What does not change is the underlying condition of the vehicle. A coach with pre-existing structural moisture that is then involved in a collision is still a coach with structural moisture, and the two scopes need separating rather than blending.

That separation matters in both directions. Repairing collision damage on a vehicle that was already deteriorating produces a well repaired panel on a failing structure. Equally, attributing pre-existing deterioration to a collision is not a position anybody at a repair facility can support, and estimates that blur the two tend to unravel at reinspection.

Whether a carrier declares a total loss is a decision made against its own thresholds and the vehicle's valuation, and it is not something a shop determines. What a shop contributes is an accurate scope and accurate documentation. An owner who wants to understand the decision should read the valuation report carefully and check what comparables it was built from.

The important boundary is that nobody in a body shop can advise you on your policy, your entitlement or your rights, and it is worth being sceptical of anyone who does. Those questions belong with your carrier and, if it becomes necessary, with your own professional advisers. The technical record and the coverage question are different conversations.

The middle path: stabilise rather than restore

There is an option between full repair and disposal that gets overlooked. Stabilising a vehicle means stopping active deterioration without correcting its appearance or restoring it to original condition. Seal every opening properly, dry what can be dried, make it safe, and accept the cosmetic state.

For an owner who wants to keep using a coach that no spreadsheet would justify restoring, this is frequently the most rational money available. Sealing a roof and windows on a coach with historic water damage stops the damage progressing at a fraction of the cost of correcting it, and the vehicle stays usable for several more seasons.

Be clear about what stabilisation does not do. It does not restore value, it does not improve saleability, and it does not undo structural damage already present. A soft floor stays soft. A delaminated wall stays delaminated. What changes is that the situation stops getting worse, which on a vehicle nearing the end of its life is often exactly the right objective.

It also buys decision time. An owner unsure whether to commit to a major repair can stabilise for a season, use the vehicle, and decide with more information and less pressure. That is a legitimate strategy, and it is a better one than authorising a large repair under time pressure at the start of a camping season.

Working the decision through, step by step

Begin with an assessment rather than an estimate. Ask for moisture mapping, sounding where the walls are suspect, and structural measurement if there has been an impact. What you want out of this stage is a description of the vehicle's condition, not a price, because the price cannot be meaningful until the condition is known.

Then get the full scope priced, including the parts nobody wants to discuss. Reassembly, refinishing, blending across adjacent panels, and reinstatement of everything removed for access are real costs and they are frequently larger than the structural work. An estimate that covers only the structural portion understates the decision.

Set your ceiling before you see the number, not after. Decide what the vehicle is worth to you, decide what proportion of that you are willing to spend, and write it down. Estimates on structural work grow at teardown by their nature, and a ceiling set in advance is the only protection against incremental drift past the point of sense.

Finally, ask the shop directly what it would do with the vehicle. A facility that is willing to say a repair is not worth doing is giving you better information than one that quotes everything cheerfully.
