Grand Design RV Repair in San Juan Capistrano
Grand Design RV builds travel trailers, fifth wheels and toy haulers in Middlebury, Indiana, and has been a Winnebago Industries company since late 2016. Reflection, Solitude, Imagine, Momentum and Transcend use aluminum framed vacuum bonded walls with an Azdel composite backer, which changes how water damage and delamination present.
How Grand Design RV builds them
- Aluminum tube framed sidewalls vacuum bonded with Azdel composite backer instead of luan plywood
- One piece TPO membrane roof pulled over radius corners with limited exposed sealant runs
- Heated and enclosed underbelly with holding tanks suspended inside the insulated cavity
- Five sided aluminum framing around every slide opening to carry the room load
- Momentum garages use a reinforced floor with tie down rings bolted through the frame rail
- MORryde independent or Lippert equalized suspension depending on line and model year

Failure patterns
What tends to go wrong on a Grand Design RV
Observed patterns from units through the shop. Every manufacturer makes different choices, and the choices show up as different repairs.
Schwintek in wall slide drives losing sync
Imagine and Transcend rooms ride on Lippert Schwintek in wall drives, where two motors are held in phase by a controller. Nylon V track wears, gear rack teeth strip, and one side begins to lead the other. The room then racks in the opening and grinds the flange and seal. Resyncing the controller is the last step, not the first: track, rack and room squareness all have to be corrected, and a side impact near the opening has to be pulled back to dimension first.
Frame stress ahead of the kingpin on long fifth wheels
Solitude and Momentum floorplans put three or four slide rooms and a loaded garage onto a Lippert I beam frame. Stress concentrates at the upper deck transition ahead of the kingpin and at outrigger to rail weld toes. Hairline cracks show first as paint flaking along a weld bead. Repair means grinding the crack out, welding with correct prep and preheat, adding a doubler where the geometry allows, and recoating, because bare weld metal under a wet underbelly corrodes fast.
Momentum ramp door hinge and seal geometry
The garage ramp is a structural closure, not a hatch. Loading a machine off center bends the ramp frame, fatigues the hinge line and stretches the support cables so the door no longer pulls the bulb seal evenly. Water then runs down the inside face into the garage floor edge, and the patio conversion hardware stops latching cleanly. Correcting the opening geometry has to come before any skin or seal replacement, or the leak returns.
Delamination hidden by the Azdel backer
Azdel does not wick water the way luan plywood does, which is a build advantage and a diagnostic problem. Sealant failure at the front cap to sidewall seam, the roof mounted air conditioner shroud, vent flanges or a skylight lets water sit locally instead of spreading a visible stain. By the time a bubble shows, the bond line around it has usually been wet for a long while. Moisture mapping the panel before opening it keeps the repair boundary honest.
