How Impact Energy Moves Through an RV

A passenger car is engineered to crush. Rails fold at designed trigger points, the cabin holds, and a trained estimator can predict roughly where the damage stops. An RV does none of that. The chassis is a ladder frame that resists deformation until it suddenly does not, and the house sitting on top is a bonded sandwich of skin, adhesive, substrate, foam and aluminum studs that transmits load laterally in ways nobody designed for. Hit a Class A on the right front and the evidence can show up at the left rear slide.

That behaviour is why the visible dent is almost never the job. A 15 mph parking lot strike against a concrete column will crack the fiberglass cap and dimple the sidewall, and it will also shear the adhesive bond three feet past the crack, tweak the entry door frame so it stops latching, and put a hairline stress fracture in the roof-to-sidewall seam where nobody looks. Six months later that seam leaks and the owner blames a roof that was never the problem.

Rear impacts behave differently again. On a fifth wheel or travel trailer the rear wall is usually the weakest structural plane in the unit, tied together with staples, glue and a thin corner moulding. A tap from behind pushes the rear cap forward, buckles the floor at the last crossmember, and drives the whole rear section out of square. The owner notices when the bedroom slide starts scraping its own opening on the way out.

Side swipes are the most under-estimated of all. A long shallow gouge down a 40 foot sidewall looks cosmetic, but a glancing hit loads the lamination in peel rather than compression, and peel is the mode that bonded panels are worst at resisting. We routinely find two to five square feet of dead bond around a scrape that looks like it needs paint.

Teardown Comes Before the Number

Writing an RV collision estimate from photographs produces a number that is wrong in one direction only, and it is never wrong in the owner's favour. We tear down before we price. Trim comes off, the interior wall panel behind the impact comes down, the affected bay gets opened, and the sealant at every adjacent seam gets probed. Only then does anyone know whether this is a skin repair or a structural rebuild, and the difference between those two answers is often an order of magnitude.

Teardown findings go into the file as photographs with a scale reference in frame, plus moisture meter readings at the impact zone and at three control points on undamaged wall. Those control readings matter more than owners expect. A pin meter reading of 22 percent behind the damage means nothing until you know the same coach reads 8 percent on a wall that was never hit. Carriers argue about pre-existing condition constantly, and paired readings end that argument early.

Sidewall, Cap and Skin Reconstruction

Rebuilding an RV sidewall is a lamination job, not a bodywork job. The wall is typically a Filon or smooth fiberglass skin bonded to a luan or Azdel substrate, which is bonded to block foam insulation, which is bonded around an aluminum tube stud cage, with an interior finish panel on the inside face. Every one of those bonds was made at the factory in a heated press under several tons of even pressure. Reproducing that in a shop requires cauls, clamping frames and vacuum, and it requires patience while the adhesive reaches handling strength.

Caps are their own discipline. A front or rear cap on a Class A is a single moulded fiberglass part with bonded-in mounting flanges, running lights, marker wiring and often the camera and antenna penetrations. Repairing one means grinding a long tapered scarf back into sound laminate, laying in mat and cloth in the correct sequence, and rebuilding thickness so the finished surface does not print through under paint. Replacing one means a factory order, a body-colour gelcoat or paint match, and a fitment session that can eat a full day before a single fastener goes in.

Skin-only damage still deserves respect. Filon is a thin, thermoset panel that will not stretch and will not take a hammer. It cracks. Once it cracks, the crack propagates along the fiber direction under road vibration until it hits a fastener or a seam. A stop-drilled crack with a bonded backing plate and a flush-filled face survives; a crack skimmed with filler and painted over reappears within one season of Interstate 5 expansion joints.

Chassis and Running Gear After a Hit

Under the house is a chassis that took its own share of the energy. On a Ford F53 or a Freightliner XC we check rail straightness against factory datum points, look for buckled outriggers, and inspect the body mount bushings and their brackets, which are frequently the first thing to shear because they are the connection between two structures with very different stiffness. On a towable, the equivalent inspection covers the main rails, the crossmembers, the A frame and the suspension hangers.

Suspension and steering geometry get checked because a hard hit moves things that do not look moved. Leaf spring hangers bend, equalizers get sprung, and on a coach a front impact can shift the axle enough to show up as a pull that the owner writes off as tire wear. We measure rather than eyeball, and where the finding is outside our scope we say so plainly and refer it out rather than pretending otherwise.

Two categories of work we do not perform, so nobody wastes a tow: internal engine rebuilding and internal transmission rebuilding. Those are specialist mechanical disciplines and this is a collision, structural and refinish facility. What we do handle is everything that holds the vehicle's shape and skin together, plus the electrical, plumbing and appliance systems disturbed by the repair itself.

Recreational vehicle claims run through a different desk than auto claims at most carriers, and the adjusters who handle them are often working from an estimating database that has thin RV coverage. Panels get priced as generic sheet, cap labour gets written at automotive hours, and the lamination sequence that consumes twenty hours of clamp-and-wait time is invisible to the system. That gap is where under-indemnified repairs come from, and closing it is documentation work, not argument work.

We write supplements the way carriers can approve them: one line item, one photograph, one reason, and the manufacturer procedure attached where one exists. A supplement that says the rear cap needs more time gets pushed back. A supplement that shows the fractured mounting flange, cites the bonding product's clamp time and prices the specific part number gets paid. Total loss math on an RV surprises people. Actual cash value on a ten year old diesel pusher can be high enough that a large repair still makes sense, while a five year old travel trailer with a caved rear wall can be totalled by a repair figure that would be unremarkable on a coach. Parts Sourcing and Honest Timelines

The single biggest driver of RV collision cycle time is not labour. It is a moulded part that one factory makes, in one colour, on a production schedule that treats service orders as filler between production runs. Front caps, rear caps, one-piece fenders and full-height sidewall panels are built to order. Six to fourteen weeks is a normal quote from the manufacturer, and it stretches when the model is discontinued or the gelcoat colour has been superseded.

We order long-lead parts the day authorization lands, not when the body work is finished, and we tell you the expected date in writing. Special order components carry a full deposit at order because the factory will not take them back once released, which is stated plainly in our posted terms rather than buried. Where a discontinued part cannot be had at any price, we fabricate: a cap can be moulded from the undamaged side, a sidewall profile can be reproduced, and a graphic can be plotted from photographs.

Realistic scheduling means we do not stage your coach in a corner of the lot waiting for a part. Structural and body work happens in a sequence, and the vehicle occupies a bay only while work is being performed on it.     Structural repair and lamination

My insurance adjuster already wrote an estimate. Do you have to tear it down again?

Yes, and the adjuster expects it. Almost every initial RV estimate is written from the outside because that is all anyone can see. Teardown produces the supplement, and the supplement is where the real scope lives. Carriers are used to this on recreational vehicles specifically because the laminated construction hides damage that automotive experience would not predict.

How long will my motorhome be in the shop?

Body and structural labour on a typical collision runs a few days to several weeks, but the calendar is usually set by parts. Moulded caps and full sidewall panels are built to order and commonly quote six to fourteen weeks from the factory. We order the day authorization lands and give you the expected date in writing so you can plan around the real number.

Can you match my coach's paint if it is fifteen years old and faded?

Usually, yes. We do not spray from the code on the tag, because a fifteen year old coach no longer matches its own code. Colour is developed on spray-out cards read against the actual panel in daylight, then blended into adjacent surfaces so the transition falls where the eye will not look for it. On heavily oxidized gelcoat we may recommend correcting the surrounding area first.

The damage looks minor. Is a full teardown really necessary?

On a laminated wall, minor and major look identical from the outside. A scrape that took a peel load can leave several square feet of dead adhesive bond behind an intact-looking skin. Tap testing takes twenty minutes and tells us whether you are buying a refinish or a rebuild. Skipping that step is how a cosmetic repair becomes a delamination claim two summers later.
