Two cab philosophies dominate and they age differently. Aerodynamic tractors such as the Cascadia, T680, 579 and VNL wrap the cab in composite fairings, integrate the sleeper into a single shell, and prioritise fuel economy over service access. Classic long-hood tractors like the W900 and the 389 keep separate bolt-on fenders, a squarer cab and a chrome bumper, which makes them far easier to repair panel by panel and far more expensive to refinish because owners expect a show-quality result. Cab construction is aluminum over a bonded and riveted structure, which is a different discipline from steel automotive bodywork. Measurement against factory dimensions, cold correction where it is appropriate, and rail replacement or reinforcement per the manufacturer guidance is how this is handled properly.

Aerodynamics changed the damage profile of this class more than any regulation did. Twenty years ago a tractor had a bumper, fenders and a step. Today it has a full underbody skirt package, cab extenders that close the gap to the trailer, roof deflectors sized to a specific trailer height and moulded fender fairings. All of it hangs low, wide and forward of the tyres, in precisely the zone that meets curbs, retreads and yard debris. Fairing damage now makes up a large share of the commercial work that comes through, and most of it is not from collisions at all.

Insurance and downtime interact sharply here. Physical damage coverage on a tractor is written on the unit value, while the loss of the vehicle costs the operator revenue every day it is down, which is what actually hurts. That pushes the priority toward parts availability and sequencing rather than toward the cheapest possible repair path. On a fleet-owned tractor the calculus differs again, since a spare unit absorbs the downtime and the fleet wants the lowest total cost. We write both kinds of estimate differently and say which assumption we used.

Cracks propagate from the hinge mounting bosses and from the corners of the headlight and grille apertures. Bonding the visible crack without reinforcing the boss simply moves the failure a few inches. Structural repair on these panels means grinding a proper scarf, laying reinforcement on the back face, and rebuilding the mounting boss where it has torn.

**Aerodynamic fairings are consumables that nobody budgets for**

Chassis skirts, roof deflectors, cab extenders and fender fairings are thermoplastic panels hung on brackets in the worst possible location for road debris and curb contact. They pay for themselves in fuel economy and they get destroyed constantly. What matters in repair is the bracket, not the panel: bent brackets misalign the panel, which then flexes in the airflow and cracks again within weeks. **Frame damage after a jackknife is rarely where the driver points**

In a jackknife the trailer loads the tractor frame through the fifth wheel, which sits over or just behind the rear suspension. The rails take a torsional and lateral load far from the point of visible contact, and a rail can be bowed or a cross member cracked with no obvious external damage. Any tractor involved in a jackknife or a hard trailer contact gets its frame measured against specification before body work is quoted, because a bent rail changes fifth wheel geometry and every downstream alignment.

**Fleet colour and owner-operator finish are two different jobs**

A fleet tractor wears a single stage or basic base and clear finish in a corporate colour, and matching it means dealing with several years of fade across a large surface. An owner-operator show truck may carry multi-stage candy, pearl, metal flake, hand-laid stripes and polished aluminum brightwork. Refinishing the second kind is closer to custom automotive work than to commercial repair, with panel sequencing, blend planning and cure schedules that add days. The estimate difference between the two is enormous for identical damage.

**Cab structure and mounts age quietly**

The cab sits on the frame on rubber or air isolators that let it move independently of the rails. As those mounts age and collapse, the cab sits lower, the doors change their relationship to the apertures, and the cab to sleeper seam starts working. Drivers report door seal noise, water leaks at the lower A pillar or a windshield that keeps cracking. Replacing glass or adjusting a door without checking the mounts wastes both parts and labour, because the geometry causing the problem has not been touched.
