First, factory paint varies batch to batch, and manufacturers publish alternate formulations, called variants, precisely because the same code was sprayed several different ways over a production run. Second, the vehicle has been in the sun. Third, coaches are frequently painted by a converter rather than the chassis manufacturer, and the record of what was actually sprayed can be thin.

Ultraviolet exposure does not fade a colour uniformly, either. Red and yellow pigments break down faster than blue and black, so a metallic bronze does not simply get lighter, it shifts hue as its warm pigments leave. Metallic and pearl finishes add another layer: the aluminium flakes and mica platelets that create the effect settle and orient differently depending on how the original was sprayed, so two panels with identical formula can read differently at an angle.

This is why our process treats the code as an index into a family of candidates rather than as the answer. Pulling the code gives us a starting formula and a set of published variants. Everything after that is measurement and comparison against the physical vehicle, which is the only reference that actually matters. A code tells us where the vehicle started. The panel in front of us tells us where it is now, and we are matching to now.

## How a Match Is Actually Developed

The vehicle gets cleaned and polished in a hidden area first. Reading colour off a chalked, oxidised or road-filmed surface produces a match to the dirt, not to the paint, and it is a mistake that shows up the moment the coach is next washed. A small area is compounded to bring the true surface back, and that corrected patch becomes the reference.

A spectrophotometer takes multi-angle readings from that reference. On a metallic or pearl, colour changes with viewing angle, so a single-angle reading is close to useless; the instrument captures the travel from face to flop and matches against a formula database. That produces a candidate formula, or several. From there we spray out test cards, using the same gun, the same pressure, the same distance and the same number of coats we intend to use on the vehicle, because application changes metallic orientation as much as formula does.

The cards get judged against the vehicle in daylight, outdoors, at multiple angles, and if the job allows it, at two different times of day. Metamerism is the trap: two colours can match perfectly under shop fluorescents and diverge visibly in afternoon sun because their pigment mixes reflect different spectra. A card that looks right only under one light source has failed, and we go back to the mixing bench rather than talking the owner into it.

Tri-coat and candy finishes need a let-down panel, which is a card sprayed with progressively more mid-coat across its width so we can see exactly how many coats produce the target. Guessing on a tri-coat is how a repair ends up half a shade deep and permanently obvious, because a tri-coat cannot be corrected by adjusting the base. The depth lives entirely in the mid-coat, so the count has to be right before the gun points at the vehicle.

## Blending: Where the Transition Goes

Even a perfect formula match is sprayed as a blend, not as a hard edge, because a hard edge between old and new film is visible under raking light no matter how good the colour is. Blending means carrying the base outward from the repair in a diminishing pattern until it disappears into the existing finish, then clearing across the whole area to a natural termination point. On a car that termination point is the next panel gap. On a coach, it may be twenty feet away.

So blend planning on a recreational vehicle is geometry work before it is paint work. We look for a rub rail, a batten strip, a compartment door edge, a graphic boundary, a body line or a change of substrate, and place the clear termination there. A graphic edge is the best available break because the eye reads the graphic as the boundary and never questions what happens underneath it. Where nothing exists within reach, the honest options are a full-panel or full-section refinish, and we will say which one the vehicle needs rather than trying to fade a clear edge into the middle of a flat wall.

Vertical surfaces on a coach have another quirk. A 40 foot sidewall is a mirror, and any variation in gloss or texture reads down its whole length. That means the blend has to match not just colour but orange peel texture, which is controlled by gun setup, reducer choice and film build. Matching texture is a separate skill from matching colour and it is the reason some repairs are invisible in colour and obvious in reflection.

## Gelcoat, Filon and Painted Coaches Are Three Different Problems

Matching into pigmented gelcoat is not the same as matching into paint. Gelcoat is a thick pigmented resin with the colour through its depth, and it ages by eroding rather than by shrinking. A gelcoat repair can be sprayed in gelcoat and cut back, which gives a true depth match, or it can be refinished in urethane, which gives easier future repairs and better ultraviolet stability but requires the surrounding area to be corrected so the two surfaces have comparable gloss.

Filon sidewall panels carry their colour in the panel surface and are typically not designed to be refinished at all. They can be, with correct scuffing and an adhesion-promoting primer, but they are thin and unforgiving of aggressive sanding, and their surface texture varies subtly across a production run. Matching a repair into Filon is often more about matching sheen and texture than hue.

Painted coaches, meaning units finished in two-component urethane by the converter, are the easiest of the three to match well, because the material is the same family as what we are spraying. What they bring instead is layer complexity: a base, one or more graphic stages, possibly a tinted clear, and a factory clear over it all. Sanding into a repair on one of these frequently exposes three or four distinct layers, and every one of them has to be rebuilt in order in the repair area.

## What Spot Repair Sensibly Covers

The economics of spot repair are excellent for damage that is small, isolated and near a natural break. A scraped compartment door, a gouged corner moulding, a stone-chipped cap, a scuff along a rub rail, a section where a bike rack rubbed through, or an area disturbed by an accessory removal all repair and blend for a fraction of what a section refinish costs.

The economics turn poor when the damage is spread out. Four separate scuffs along one sidewall means four blend zones, four masking setups and four rounds of judging, and at that point a full-section refinish is both cheaper and better looking. We will tell you when you have crossed that line, because doing four spots and then being asked why the wall looks patchy is a conversation neither of us wants.

There is also a class of damage that is not a paint problem at all. A wall that has delaminated, a fiberglass panel with active crazing, or a substrate with moisture in it will destroy a new finish from underneath. Colour work goes on top of sound structure. If the surface underneath is moving, the correct answer is to fix that first, and we would rather say so than take the paint money twice.

Cleaning and correcting a reference area, taking instrument readings, mixing candidates, spraying cards and judging them in daylight is real labour before a single coat lands on the vehicle. On a faded or tri-coat finish it can be several hours. We itemise it rather than hiding it in the refinish hours, so you and the carrier both see what it is.

One thing we will not do is talk an owner into accepting a near match to close a claim quickly. If the best achievable blend still reads at certain angles, you hear that before we spray, along with the alternative, which is usually extending the refinish to a natural break. Insurance timelines are somebody else's pressure and they are not a reason to hand back a coach with a patch on it.

For a single isolated area near a natural break, comfortably. **Can gelcoat be matched, or does the whole panel have to be painted?**

Gelcoat can be matched and sprayed as gelcoat, which gives true depth since the colour runs through the material, then cut back to blend. The alternative is refinishing the area in urethane, which is easier to repair later and holds up better under ultraviolet, but it usually means correcting the surrounding gelcoat so the gloss levels agree. We recommend based on the panel's condition.

**Will the repair still match in five years?**

The repaired area and the surrounding finish will age at slightly different rates, because new film has full ultraviolet package and old film does not.
