## Substrate Decides Everything

Aluminium, which covers a huge proportion of trailer sidewalls and commercial bodies, work-hardens as it deforms and has much less memory, so the same push that fixes steel can crack aluminium at the edge of the dent.

Then there are the materials that do not dent at all. Fiberglass and gelcoat are rigid and brittle, so an impact that would dimple sheet metal produces a crack, a stress-whitened area or a fracture with no permanent deflection at all. Filon behaves the same way, and it also has no reverse access on a laminated wall, which we come back to below. Anything on those substrates is a laminate repair rather than a dent repair, and treating it as a dent is how a small crack becomes a large one.

Correct identification takes a minute and changes the entire quote. We check the panel with a magnet, look at the fracture behaviour at the deepest point, and read the panel edge or the back face where it is visible. That determines whether the job is paintless work, conventional metal finishing, or a fiberglass repair wearing a dent's clothing. It also determines the price, which is why we would rather spend the minute than quote from a photograph and revise upward later.

## Paintless Repair and Its Real Boundaries

Paintless dent repair works by reintroducing the stretch in reverse, either by pushing from behind with a rod or by pulling from the face with a glued tab, in dozens of small controlled movements read under a line board. When it works it is the best outcome available: the factory finish is never disturbed, the repair cannot fade differently, and the cost is a fraction of a refinish.

It needs four conditions to be viable. The finish must be uncracked, because a paintless push through a cracked clear coat simply spreads the crack. The panel must have reasonable crown, because a very flat panel has nothing to hold shape against and tends to oil-can. The metal must not be stretched past its recovery point, which a sharp crease usually is. And there must be access to the back, or the face must accept glue tabs without pulling the finish off.

That last condition eliminates most of a recreational vehicle immediately. A laminated sidewall has insulation and a stud cage bonded directly behind the skin. There is no cavity, no access hole and nowhere to put a rod, so any paintless work on an RV wall is glue pull only, and glue pull on aged, oxidised or previously repaired finish is a real risk of lifting film. We test in a low-visibility area before committing on any coach older than a few years.

Where paintless is viable, we say so and price it as the first option, because it is cheaper and it preserves original finish. Where it is not, we say that too. Owners are frequently told a coach can be repaired paintlessly by someone who has not considered what is bonded behind the panel, and the discovery happens after the deposit.

## Hail: Counting Before Fixing

Hail on a recreational vehicle is a different claim from hail on a car, and it is routinely under-settled for one reason: nobody climbs on the roof. The visible damage on the sidewalls and the cab gets counted, and the roof membrane, the air conditioner shrouds, the skylights, the vent lids and the plastic roof accessories are inspected from the ground or not at all. Those are the components that actually fail after a hail event, because a cracked vent lid or a punctured membrane becomes a water intrusion problem within a season.

Documentation is the whole game. A hail estimate that says moderate damage throughout settles very differently from one that presents a panel-by-panel dent map with counts by size band, photographed under raking light with a dent board. Repair method then follows the map. Small shallow dimples in a steel or aluminium cab panel are paintless candidates. Dimples in a Filon or fiberglass sidewall are not dents at all, they are impact fractures, and they need laminate attention. Cracked skylight domes, vent lids and air conditioner shrouds are replacement parts. A properly written hail claim on a coach usually contains all four categories, and lumping them into one line is how the settlement comes back short.

## Conventional Metalwork Where Paintless Cannot Reach

When the finish has cracked, the crease is sharp, or there is no way to reach the back, the panel gets worked conventionally. That means shrinking the stretched metal back toward its original area and raising the low spots to within a hair of final contour before any filler is considered. Stud welding and slide-hammer pulls on steel, controlled heat shrinking where the metal has stretched, and careful hammer and dolly work all sit in this category.

Aluminium is worked differently and it is worth understanding why. It has no colour change when heated, so the operator cannot see how hot it is getting until it collapses, and it conducts heat away so quickly that a localised shrink is hard to hold. Work-hardening means a panel can only be moved so many times before it becomes brittle in that area. The practical consequence is that aluminium dent work is slower, more conservative and more likely to end in panel replacement than the equivalent job in steel.

Filler comes last and comes thin. A correctly metal-finished panel needs a skim to correct the final few thousandths, blocked with a long board to the surrounding contour. What produces the failures owners have seen is filler used as a substitute for metalwork: a quarter inch of polyester bridging a dent that was never raised. That thickness shrinks over the following months, telegraphs the outline of the repair through the paint, and cracks at the edges where it meets the panel.

## Dents That Are Actually Structural Findings

Some dents are just dents. Others are the visible end of something that matters much more. A dimple in a laminated wall with a hollow tap sound around it is a delamination, and pushing the skin flat without addressing the dead bond leaves you with a flat wall that is still structurally compromised. A crease in a box truck side panel that runs to a post is often a bent post. A dented compartment door that no longer closes squarely usually means the opening moved, not the door.

## Process

**Can paintless dent repair be used on my RV sidewall?**

Rarely, and it is worth understanding why. A laminated wall has insulation and an aluminium stud cage bonded directly behind the skin, so there is no cavity to work a rod into. That leaves glue pulling from the face, which risks lifting aged or oxidised finish. On steel truck cabs and some commercial panels with genuine backside access, paintless is very much on the table.

**Why can my fiberglass panel not be pushed back out?**

Because fiberglass does not dent, it fractures. The material is rigid and brittle, so an impact that would dimple sheet metal instead cracks the laminate or produces internal stress whitening with no permanent deflection. Pushing on it spreads the damage. What looks like a dent on a fiberglass cap is a laminate repair: grind a tapered scarf, rebuild with reinforcement, fair and refinish.

**My insurance offered a flat amount for hail. Should I take it?**

Not before the roof has been inspected. Hail settlements on recreational vehicles are commonly written from a ground-level look, which misses membrane punctures, cracked skylight domes, damaged vent lids and air conditioner shroud impacts. Pushing the skin flat leaves a wall that looks corrected and is still structurally compromised, and the dead bond area will keep growing. That job belongs in delamination repair, not dent repair.
