## How an Absorption Refrigerator Actually Cools

The refrigerator in most coaches has no compressor and no moving parts in its cooling circuit at all. It works by boiling a solution of ammonia and water with a small LP flame or an electric element, then letting the ammonia condense, mix with hydrogen gas, evaporate and absorb heat from the cabinet. Sodium chromate in the solution inhibits corrosion of the steel tubing. That is the entire machine, and it is a genuinely elegant piece of engineering.

It is also fragile in specific ways. The circuit depends on gravity to return liquid to the boiler, which is why running one significantly off level causes the solution to pool and the boiler tube to overheat. Repeated off level operation crystallizes sodium chromate into a blockage, and once the circuit is blocked it cannot be cleared. The cooling unit is welded closed and pressurized, so there is nothing to service inside it.

The other consequence is heat rejection. An absorption unit relies on airflow up the back through the sidewall vents to carry away the heat it produces, and it has very little reserve capacity. On a hundred degree afternoon in a coach parked in direct sun, a unit with an obstructed vent stack or a missing baffle simply stops keeping up. Owners read that as a failed fridge. Usually it is a ventilation problem.

## Norcold, Dometic and the Recall History Worth Knowing

Both major absorption manufacturers have issued recalls over boiler tube failures that could release hydrogen and result in a fire. Those campaigns covered large numbers of units across many model years, and the recall remedy in most cases was a thermal control device that shuts the unit down when it detects the temperature signature of a failing boiler rather than a replacement cooling unit. That distinction matters, because an owner with a recall device fitted still has the original cooling unit.

If a unit is subject to an open campaign, the manufacturer's remedy is the right first step and it costs you nothing through the dealer network.

Signs of a boiler problem are worth committing to memory. A strong ammonia odor, a yellow or green residue staining the tubing behind the unit, and a unit that cooled well and then abruptly stopped are the three that matter most. Any of them means the unit should be shut off at the LP and the 120 volt supply and not used until it has been examined.

## Thermistors, Eyebrow Boards and False Failures

A large share of refrigerators condemned as dead are actually reporting a control fault. The thermistor is a small temperature sensor clipped to a fin in the fresh food compartment, and its position on that fin determines what the control board thinks the cabinet temperature is. Move it two fins and the unit will run at a completely different setpoint or refuse to cycle correctly. It is also a cheap part that drifts as it ages.

The user interface, often called the eyebrow board on Norcold units, is a common failure and its symptoms are dramatic. Displays that flash, buttons that do nothing, units that switch modes on their own or refuse to start on gas. Because the symptom looks catastrophic, owners frequently get quoted a full cooling unit when the actual fault is a display assembly.

The proper sequence is boring and effective. Verify supply voltage at the unit, read the fault code where the board provides one, measure thermistor resistance against its temperature curve, confirm the electric element resistance and the LP igniter operation, and only then evaluate the cooling unit itself. Cooling unit failure is diagnosed by boiler temperature and by evaporator behavior, not by elimination and a shrug.

## Converting to 12-Volt Compressor Refrigeration

When an absorption cooling unit fails, the honest options are a replacement cooling unit, a complete replacement absorption refrigerator, or a conversion to a 12-volt compressor unit. The conversion has become the most common choice on coaches with meaningful battery capacity, and for good reason. Compressor units cool faster, hold temperature in extreme heat, work at any angle of the coach, and are indifferent to whether you are level.

The tradeoff is electrical. A compressor refrigerator draws real current continuously rather than sipping LP, so the conversion only makes sense alongside a battery bank and charging system that can carry it. On a coach with a lithium bank and a decent array it is transformative. On a coach with a single lead acid battery and no solar it will disappoint on the second night.

The physical work is more involved than dropping a box in a hole. The aperture almost never matches, so the cabinet needs framing modification and trim fabrication, the vent openings in the sidewall need to be sealed or repurposed since a compressor unit does not need them, and the electrical supply needs to be upgraded from the small circuit that fed the absorption unit's control board. We handle all of it as one job, including the cabinetry.

## Cooktops, Ovens, Microwaves and Laundry

Cooktop and oven faults come down to gas supply, igniters and thermocouples. A burner that lights and goes out when you release the knob has a failed thermocouple, which is a small and inexpensive part. Uneven or yellow flames point at a partially blocked orifice or low manifold pressure, the same pressure question that affects the furnace and the water heater. Oven thermostats drift and are calibrated rather than replaced where the design allows.

Convection microwaves fail in the usual ways, with door interlock switches being the single most common cause of a unit that is completely dead. They also die from low voltage at a crowded campground pedestal, since the high voltage transformer is unforgiving about supply quality. We test supply voltage under load before condemning any microwave, and that alone saves a fair number of them.

Ventless washer dryer combinations, the Splendide family in particular, are excellent when maintained and miserable when neglected. They fail at the drain pump, which collects hair and lint and stalls, and at the door boot seal, which tears. They also need genuinely level installation and a water supply that can actually deliver, since a marginal pump makes fill cycles time out. Icemakers, where fitted, fail at the fill valve and the water line far more often than at the mechanism.

## Ventilation, Baffles and the Repairs That Prevent Repairs

The single highest-value thing you can do for an absorption refrigerator costs almost nothing. Behind the unit, a sheet metal baffle is supposed to direct incoming air from the lower sidewall vent up across the boiler and condenser fins and out the upper vent or roof stack. On a startling number of coaches that baffle is missing, crushed or was never installed correctly at the factory, and the air simply bypasses the heat exchanger.

Add to that a decade of dust, wasp nests and the occasional rodent, and the airflow path is a fraction of what it was designed to be. We pull the lower vent, clean the entire cavity, verify or fabricate the baffle, and where the coach lives in serious heat we fit thermostatically controlled fans to force the airflow. The temperature improvement inside the cabinet is often several degrees, which is the difference between adequate and failing on a hot day.

The other prevention item is levelling discipline. Absorption units tolerate a few degrees off level while parked and are fine while driving because the motion keeps the solution moving. Parking on a slope overnight is what does the damage. Anyone with a functioning levelling system already has the answer, which is another reason those two systems get looked at together.

## Process

01. **Supply verification and fault codes** Twelve volt and 120 volt supply measured at the appliance under load, LP manifold pressure confirmed, and any stored fault code read from the control board before a single component is suspected.

02. **Control and sensor testing** Thermistor resistance checked against its temperature curve and its fin position verified, user interface function tested, element and igniter resistance measured, and gas valve operation confirmed on the LP side.

03. **Cooling unit assessment** Boiler temperature measured at operating condition, evaporator behavior observed through a full pulldown, and the circuit inspected for the residue and odor signatures of a compromised boiler tube.

04. **Ventilation cavity service** Lower vent removed, cavity cleaned of dust and nesting debris, baffle presence and condition verified or fabricated, roof stack cleared, and forced ventilation fitted where the operating environment calls for it.

**My refrigerator cools on gas but not on electric. What does that mean?**

It means the cooling unit is fine and the fault is on the electric side. Almost always it is the heating element, its thermal cutoff, or the relay on the control board that switches it. All three are measurable and all three are repairable. If the unit had a blocked cooling circuit, it would fail on both energy sources equally, which is the single most useful diagnostic distinction on an absorption fridge.

**Is it worth replacing the cooling unit or should I convert to a compressor fridge?**

It depends on your electrical system. A compressor conversion cools better, holds temperature in real heat and does not care whether the coach is level, but it draws continuous current. With a lithium bank and solar it is a clear upgrade. With one lead acid battery and no charging beyond the converter, a replacement cooling unit or a new absorption unit is the more sensible answer.

**How level does the coach need to be for an absorption refrigerator?**

Within a few degrees while parked. The circuit relies on gravity to return liquid to the boiler, so a significant slope lets solution pool and the boiler tube overheat. Driving is not a problem because the motion keeps everything moving. Parking overnight on a slope repeatedly is what crystallizes the solution and permanently blocks the circuit, and that damage cannot be reversed.

**Why does my fridge stop keeping up on hot days?**

Ventilation, in most cases. Absorption units reject heat through an airflow path up the back, and that path depends on a sheet metal baffle that is frequently missing or crushed.
