## What happened

Almost every slide failure that arrives at OCRV Center is described as a motor problem, and the motor is almost never the problem. Motors fail because they are asked to move a room that has stopped moving freely, and on toy haulers the reason is usually the floor. A garage floor carries motorcycles, a generator and fuel, and the living slide alongside it carries cabinetry and a slide-out sofa. Over years the span sags, and the room starts fighting its own opening.

This one measured five eighths of an inch of deflection across the slide floor span once the room was staged out and supported. That is enough to drop the outboard edge onto the wiper seal, which is what produced the dirt streak the owner had been wiping off the sidewall for two seasons, and enough to load the roller assemblies until the drive motor drew current hard enough to trip its own thermal protection. Replacing the motor alone would have produced the same failure inside a year.

The measurement mattered for the claim as well as for the repair. OCRV Center submitted the deflection figures and photographs with the supplement so the carrier could see why the motor had failed rather than being asked to take it on trust. The response split the job: motor, rollers and seals were paid, and floor reinforcement was declined as gradual deterioration. That is a defensible position and it was set out to the owner in writing, with the customer-pay portion priced separately before anything was authorised.

Reinforcement used members sized to the original framing rather than heavier stock, because adding stiffness in one place on a slide floor simply moves the flex somewhere else. The span was brought flat and re-measured under load rather than unloaded, which is the only reading that means anything. Only then were the roller assemblies renewed, the rails cleaned and lubricated with the compound the mechanism manufacturer specifies, and the drive motor replaced.

Seals went on last and against a square room, which is the whole point of the sequence. A bulb seal works by compression, so a room sitting a fraction low leaks past perfectly sound rubber every time it rains. Fitting new seals to a sagging room is the most common wasted repair in this trade and it is why owners end up replacing seals every couple of years. On this trailer the wipers, bulbs and D seals were replaced once, after the room finally sat where it was designed to sit.

Water had already reached the flooring at the room edge, so that section was cut back to sound material and replaced rather than dried and covered. The room was then cycled repeatedly and the perimeter water tested before release. The owner collected with the deflection measurements, the coverage split and the full photograph file in hand, and with a straight answer about which parts of the trailer will need watching on the same span in future.
