Campers are the category people underestimate. A truck camper looks like a small motorhome, a pop-up looks like a simple trailer, and a teardrop looks like a box on a frame, so owners assume the repairs are correspondingly simple. They are not. Small units are built to tighter weight budgets than any motorhome, which means thinner skins, lighter framing, less redundant structure, and mechanisms that are carrying loads much closer to their design limits. There is less margin in every direction.

Weight is the organizing constraint. A truck camper has to sit within the payload capacity of the pickup carrying it, which on many half-ton and three-quarter-ton trucks leaves very little headroom once water, gear and passengers are added. A pop-up has to be light enough that a modest tow vehicle can move it and that a lift mechanism can raise the roof by hand or on a small electric motor. ## Why does camper construction fail differently from a motorhome?

Take the same laminated panel used on a Class A and thin every layer. Where a motorhome sidewall might use aluminum tube framing on sixteen inch centres with substantial gauge, a truck camper uses lighter tube, wider spacing, or in some designs a moulded fiberglass shell with almost no internal framing at all. Where a motorhome roof carries walkable decking, most campers explicitly are not rated to be walked on. There is simply less material between you and the outside.

The consequence is that damage propagates further from the same impact. A branch strike that dents a motorhome roof and stops will punch through a camper roof and continue into the ceiling panel. A rock chip that spalls gelcoat on a heavy laminate can crack through a thin one. The visible damage is a smaller fraction of the total affected area, which is why estimating a camper from photographs is even less reliable than estimating a motorhome that way.

Fasteners tell the same story. Lighter framing gives screws less material to bite into, and years of road vibration works them loose in a way that heavier construction resists. Cabinet doors sag, wall-mounted fixtures pull away, and exterior trim screws back out and open a water path. Retorquing a camper's fasteners is genuine preventive maintenance rather than fussiness.

## Truck camper problems: jacks, bed rails and the mounting interface

The interface between camper and truck bed is where most truck camper damage originates. The camper sits on the bed floor, is held down by four tie-downs to frame-mounted anchors, and is separated from the bed rails by a gap that is supposed to stay a gap. When the tie-downs loosen or the camper shifts, the lower sidewalls contact the bed rails and grind. That contact damage runs the full length of the camper on one or both sides and is one of the most common repairs on this class.

Corner jacks are the second cluster. Electric jacks fail at the motor, at the gearbox, and at the mounting bracket where the load concentrates. Manual jacks bend when a camper is loaded or unloaded on uneven ground, which is most driveways. A bent jack transfers load into the camper's corner structure, and repairs frequently involve rebuilding that corner as well as replacing the jack. Jack brackets pulling out of a sidewall is a structural repair, not a hardware swap.

The overcab bunk is the third. That section overhangs the truck cab with no support beneath it, cantilevered off the main body, and it carries the sleeping load plus whatever inertia a rough road generates. Cracking at the transition where the bunk meets the main body is a known pattern on higher mileage units, and it needs structural repair rather than cosmetic filling.

## Pop-up campers: lift systems, tent fabric and roof structure

A pop-up is a machine with a house attached, and the machine is the lift. Most use a cable and pulley system driven by a hand crank or a small electric motor, with four cables routed through pulleys at the corners to raise the roof evenly. Cables fray at the pulley contact points and at the drum, and a cable that snaps under load drops one corner of the roof, which twists the roof frame and usually damages the tent fabric on the way down.

Cable replacement is a full system job rather than a single cable swap. The cables age together, so replacing one leaves three that are the same age and about to do the same thing. The job requires supporting the roof independently, replacing all four cables, inspecting the pulleys and the drum for wear grooves that would chew a new cable, and then setting the lift so all four corners rise evenly. Uneven lift is the most common complaint after a poorly executed cable job.

Tent fabric fails from UV and from mildew, in that order. Vinyl-coated fabric stiffens and cracks at the fold lines, which is why the tears always appear where the material creases when the roof is down. Storing a pop-up with damp fabric produces mildew that stains permanently and degrades the coating. Panels can be replaced individually or the whole tent can be replaced, and OCRV Center handles both plus zipper, window screen and bow repairs.

The roof itself is the third area. Pop-up roofs are thin laminated panels with minimal structure, they are not walkable, and they take hail and branch damage readily. Because the roof also carries the lift attachment points, damage there is structural, not cosmetic.

## Teardrops, micro-trailers and small towable repair

The small towable segment has grown fast and its build quality varies more than any other category. At one end are welded aluminum monocoque teardrops built to a genuine engineering standard. At the other are units assembled from a purchased frame, a plywood shell and an aluminum skin, sometimes by very small manufacturers with no parts support at all. Both come through the shop and they need completely different approaches.

The recurring structural issue on wood-framed teardrops is water reaching the frame through the galley hatch seal or the roof seam. Because the shell is the structure on these units, rot is structural damage immediately rather than eventually. The repair means opening the shell, replacing the affected framing, and re-skinning, which on a curved teardrop profile requires forming the skin rather than simply cutting a flat sheet.

Galley hatches deserve their own note. The rear hatch on a teardrop is a large hinged panel with a continuous seal along a curved perimeter, held up by gas struts, and it is the single most common leak point on the design. Hinge fastener pull-through, seal compression set and failed struts that let the hatch slam are all routine repairs.

Parts support is the practical constraint. Where a manufacturer has gone out of business or never stocked parts, OCRV Center fabricates: hatch hinges, custom brackets, formed skins and replacement framing. ## Water damage in a small camper is structural sooner

In a Class A, water that gets past a seal has to travel through substantial framing before it compromises anything load-bearing. In a camper, there is often no distinction between the skin, the insulation and the structure. A single laminated panel is doing all three jobs. When moisture reaches the backer and the bond releases, the unit has lost stiffness immediately, and on a truck camper that stiffness is what keeps the box square while a pickup twists underneath it.

The tell-tales are consistent across the class. A soft spot on the floor near the entry step. A wall that flexes when you push it. A ceiling panel that has separated at a seam. Staining at a window corner or at the base of a roof vent. Any of these on a small unit should be investigated immediately rather than watched, because the progression is faster than owners expect.

Common entry points are the roof vent flanges, the AC or fan opening, the seams where roof meets sidewall, window flanges, and on truck campers the wiring pass-through and the tie-down attachment points, which are penetrations through the sidewall that carry load and flex constantly. Each is a small area that is easy to renew and expensive to ignore.

## Weight, payload and why repair method matters on a camper

Every repair on a camper is also a weight decision. Add a layer of extra fiberglass here, a steel reinforcing plate there, a heavier replacement panel because it was what the supplier had, and a truck camper can gain sixty or eighty pounds through a repair that was supposed to be a restoration. On a pickup already close to its payload rating with water, gear and passengers aboard, that is not a rounding error.

The disciplined approach is to match the original layup and the original materials. If the factory used a specific aluminum tube section, the repair uses that section rather than a heavier one that happens to be in stock. If the skin was a particular gauge, the replacement matches it. Where reinforcement is genuinely required because the original design proved inadequate, it is placed deliberately and its weight is noted rather than added casually.

The same logic applies to renovations. Owners frequently want solid surface countertops, residential fixtures, tile flooring or a substantial battery bank in a unit that was designed around thin laminate and plastic. All of it is possible, and all of it has a weight cost that has to be accounted for against the platform's rating. A build that exceeds it does not fail dramatically; it wears out suspension, tyres and structure quietly and early.

## Getting a camper to the shop from San Juan Capistrano
